Default Pulled battery, now engine cranks, but no fire.

Ok guys, I need some help. Some idiot (me) drained the battery. I pulled the battery out of the car to charge. Put the recharged battery back in the car. Now the electical system seems to be functioning right and the car cranks just fine. But I get some initial fire out of the engine and then nothing, like no more fuel or no more spark.

I know I have seen something similar here in the past but can't find it. So do I need to pull a specific fuse, follow some rebattery procedure, or something much worse. (please no computer please no computer)

Thanks is advance.

I would guess something fuel pump related. Try turning the key from off to 'run' a few times and see if you can hear the fuel pump running. I'm not sure of which fuse you speak of, but obviously you should check over them all if you think that's the problem. I'm not sure how the fuel pump is triggered after the engine is running but to me, that sounds like the problem.

You sure there's enough gas in it?? I ran out with the gauge on "1/4" tank one time...and pretty much anytime I'm under 1/2 tank it takes a good 4-5 seconds of turning the engine over before it starts up.

Sounds very familiar to my issue I had a year back or so. Unfortunately someone deleted all the old posts on the board it appears, so I can't find the thread.

Is it setting any codes? Check and make sure. Give me the codes if it does come up. Your BCM may not be synched with the PCM anymore.

Ok this brings up a good question, how do I check my codes? After the fuses (no luck) and gas (full tank) that is probably a good place to start.

Turn ignition to first on position. Push reset to clear any text on column. Press and hold Options and then press Fuel 4 times. This will be make the codes list out if I am remebering this correctly.

Ok, I pulled the codes and a whole bunch showed up. I am guessing the H’s are historical codes and the C is the current code. If that is the case, the only current code is the PCM code. Here is the list, maybe you code guys can tell me what they mean.

10 PCM: P1631 H C

28 TCS: C1255H

L10BCM: B0432H
B0502H
B0503H
B0507H
B0508H
B2482H

AOLDCM: B2282H
B2284H
U1064H

A1RDCM: B2283H
B2285H

A6SCM: B0851H

B0 RFA: U1255H

Ah yes, 1631. That's the same problem I had when I stored my car for the winter without the battery. Same symptoms too. Cranks fine, fires once immediately and that's it.

From what I understand, it's caused by a loss of synch between the PCM and the BCM. To re-synch manually, you have to:

Turn ignition on (do not start) for 11 mins or longer.
Turn off for 30 seconds or longer
On for 11 mins
Off for 30 seconds
On for 11 mins
Off for 30 seconds

Try to start it. I bet it'll work. If you screw up any part of the process you will have to start over. The times listed are a MINIMUM. As long as you do at least 11 mins/30 seconds minimum, you're fine.

Unfortunately, ever since this incident, unplugging the battery, even for a moment, causes the synch to be lost. I have never figured out the cause. I just don't disconnect the battery anymore. I figure replacing the BCM will probably fix it, but I don't feel like doing that I just hook up a battery tender in the winter now and it's been fine.

My theory is that the problem is like a BIOS battery in a computer. It stores the system's settings when you unplug it from the wall. I think there's some sort of similar backup battery in our cars, that if you disconnect the main battery for long enough, will cause the backup to die.

I had a big thread on this on a few boards, when this happened 2 years ago, and no one had any clue.

Yea, that's it alright. Dope you ROCK! I won't be able to try this tonight, but should be able to do it Thrusday night. I will let you know how it goes.

What a crazy procedure, but if it works, it will be the best hour I ever wasted. Thanks for the heads up on the problem cropping up in the future. Will expect it if my battery gets disconnected.

Hey Dope,

Here is your update. After following your resync procedure, car fired right up last night. No problems today and I am back to driving the vette. Who knew how much I could miss that car after only a week. So thanks once again, saved my wallet and my pride.

I have a broken BCM and have disassembled it. There is nothing in it that would save the memory battery wise. There are what looks like two capacitors but nothing like a battery. It anything like that exist, it must reside in the PCM. I would like to get my hands on a bad one and disassemble it!

EXCELLENT advice!!

I wish I had seen the thread. No one answered my thread listen to my story. I think the solution that you got would have solved my problems. Here is my story.

I disconect my battery this weekend reconnected it and my DIC went crazy. Disconnected and reconnected the battery DIC was fine. I did not do any electrical work. Today I put the airconditioning on and the driver side was hot and the passenger side had cold air. After I tried looking in the manual for something simple I could do easily. I disconnected and reconnected the battery with the air off everything works fine. Does any one have a clue what happened? I happy but confused.

Thanks
John

PS: Never diconnect your battery

Thanks Bill

I wish I knew what was causing the problem too. I'd hate to spend the $$ to replace the PCM and the BCM and such, especially with the need for reprogramming. I just leave my battery connected and I'll just have to re-synch every 5 years or so when I get a new battery.
