Just in case it helps someone, I successfully repaired a keyfob for my 2000. If you open it up and look at the circuit board there is a rectangular component in the upper right (behind the lock button) which is attached with four solder joints. On mine, two of them came loose (probably not soldered correctly at the factory). I removed the board from the case and the rubber piece and with a small pointed soldering iron I was able to reattach them and the fob became functional again (I also reprogrammed it). There is not much to lose trying to fix it.

I just checked my old "bad" one (also a 2000) and guess what!?
Hopefully i can resurrect my old one to be my backup. Time to break out the soldering iron! I love the smell of flux in the morning...
Good call, thanks for sharing! Gotta love this forum!

P.S. I just hope this isn't indicitive of how the computer connections were done.
UPDATE: Touched up those connections on the old one, and now i have a working backup remote! This Buds for you!

EU-FREAKIN-REKA!!!
I just read this post and decided to check my broken one, which happened to be in my pocket and...you guessed it. Another 2000 key fob with a cold solder joint. I hit it with a couple of drops of solder and reprogrammed it. Now she's back in action.
Thanks a lot. You just saved me $140.00 at the dealer, and peace of mind by not having to buy a cheap used one or getting scammed by someone on the internet.
There are many posts on how to do this, but there are a couple different things you can do.
The easiest thing to try first is to hold down the lock and unlock buttons at the same time. Eventually the car will beep at you, and then try out the remote. I can't remember if you need the key in the ignition for this or not, i always put the key in and turn it (but not start it).
You can also go through the programming menus on the display to sync your remote(s). You can search on that since i dont feel like typing it all out. Theres a DIY article for it too.
C5XTASY- If it dies when you put in a new battery, it probably just needs to be synchronized. Stand next to the car and press the lock and unlock buttons at the same time. After a few seconds, the horn will honk and it should work again.

Thanks, I appreciate the tip. However, I did try this before I posted, and no go. I also tried programming via the DIC method, and again no go. I hope mine is just a cold solder joint, too.

My back up FOB when I program it by holding the two buttons down, it will work for about 5 minutes, then it will stop working. I can do this again with the same results. I also programmed it going through the more lengthy process outlined in the manual, again one of the FOB works fine, the other one again stops working after a few minutes. What could be causing my problem.

If one of your remotes is working fine and the other is acting up chances are you need to replace it.
I'm assuming you have a fresh battery in it.
You can find remotes on Ebay and if possible buy a new one. With a used one you don't know its condition.
Make sure the numbers match on the back
When you program the new one you will also have to reprogram the good one.
