My tranny temps are around 180-190 in traffic and 160 on the highway. Doesn't get very warm.

DOH ( Homer head here ) I should have known. Does the A4 really generate that much heat? My wifes A4 does have a temp gauge and can be displayed in the DIC. Granted it is our steet car and we do not drive it hard at all. Well unless there is a Porsche up the road

Just wondering.

I've got a friend that fun-runs an A4 at MotorSports Ranch, and he regulates his runs based on monitoring his tranny temps. He backs off for a lap or two when it gets to 250, if I remember right (about 10 degrees before the tranny temp warning is displayed). Under those kind of driving conditions, his engine oil temps are usually in the 230-240 range, for comparison.

So, yup, I'd say they can get pretty hot.

And if this is the worst Homer-ism you've had today, it's a pretty good day!

Have a good one,
Mike

Yup sounds like it does. the oil temp of 230- 240 is Ok But tranny temp of 250. Yup that is getting up there and needs more cooling. Thanks

seams like 250-260* are the magic numbers of both the oil and trans to back off and cool down.

Thank you for your explanation. In those terms, I think I got it. Sometimes it takes a little extra headwork to get something to make sense. appreciated

Default Avoiding the Heat...

I've a basic (non-modded) 99 C5, with A4. Just got my Tranny filter changed. It has 18XXX miles on it. Not much for milage, but its a 6 yrs old car, and filter change was due (according to the manual). My question is, I'd like to avoid any future problems with Tranny/Engine running hot. I do plan to add mods to the car. So what kind of coolers should I use for the engine & tranny .. ???

I was told by my mechanic to add the Transgo kit to the A4. He said it'll cost about $400 for the kit installed. It should give more fluid to the tranny and firm the shift points, resulting in cooler tranny + longer lasting. He also told me, while I'm at it to add a tranny cooler.

I'm not too sure what kinda tranny cooler is the BEST for my car. And while I'm adding a tranny cooler, how about adding an engine oil cooler too.... wouldn't that help, or be nice for the car ... ???

Thanks in advance for your replies... I'm sure a lot of ppl would benefit from some knowlegable ppl on this issue...

If you're just going to be driving on the street or drag racing, don't bother with the coolers. Normal driving doesn't put enough heat into the system to overcome the existing coolers, and while drag racing puts a bunch of heat into the system, it's such a short period of time that, again, the stock coolers can handle it.

If you're going to autocross or road race your car, then you absolutely need a transmission cooler, followed close behind by an engine oil cooler. Probably also a power steering cooler (Z51 cars come with these from the factory, I believe).

As far as the Transgo kit in concerned, I don't see it providing any legitimate cooling at all. And, your mechanic admitted the same thing, when he said "while I'm at it to add a tranny cooler." Shift point firmness is up to you (I'm a clutch guy, myself)

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike
