I just found blisters in the sidewalls of a rear Michelin Pilot runflat 275-40-18 on my 99 Vette. These were pretty subtle, which is why I never noticed them before. My tire shop dismounted the tire and found the liner delaminating, say the tire is junk. These tires have only 15K on them, show very little wear. Would it be safe to replace just the one tire, or is that going to cause any handling problems or rear differential problems??? Or does anyone have a lightly used Michelin for sale??
Wow,, sounds like defective tire under warranty,, I would look into replacement under warranty. Blisters really sound like safety defect. Consider NTSB documentation for highway safety.
Best of luck.
Answer,, YES replace,, I might consider all 4. Thanks I am within about 4 months of new tires,, I will hold off to see what happens to yours. Good luck,, 99 Nassau Blue
With 15k on them, my suggestion is to change at least both rears. Putting new tires on the rear and leaving used ones on the front isn't inherently dangerous, but the opposite can be true was the car may exhibit a lot of oversteer with sticky new front tires and worn out old ones on the rear.
So, while changing the rear two only now may be fine, changing the fronts later when they wear out may give you a little trouble, so be careful.
Thanks for the kind replies. I am searching around right now trying to find a good used one. I checked the tread depth and have about 5/32nds left, so figure if I can come up with one pretty close I will go that route. If not, will probably buy a complete set, but will ditch the run-flats and just carry an inflation pump and plug kit to do roadside repairs. I could not believe the hassles I got getting anyone to even inspect and dismount this tire. Went to four tire shops in Albuquerque, NM to find one willing to work on it. Then, considering the condition, a patch was out of the question, so we just aired it up, I bought a pump at AutoZone, and we hit the road back to Durango, keeping the speed at about 65mph. The interesting thing was, the tire lost no air while in motion, but you could actually hear it hissing whenever we stopped. Got home safely, but considering the cost of two new ones, would be better off with a complete set of non runflats. Will see if can come up with a good used one before making that decision.
