Ok, so I had the "pull key. wait 10 sec..." message hit me this past weekend. I have a 2000 A4 and had the recall done some 6 to 9 months ago that removed the locking mechanism and intalled a relay harness and have had no issue. This past weekend, bam, the message and fuel being cut off to the car. So I am dead in the water, thank goodness this happened in the driveway. Anyway after reading all the post and the sticky post, and pulling fuses (#23 and #25), I found that the only way to resolve the problem was to remove the K harness from the circuit. Turns out there is an issue with recalls done that installed a k harness with a white relay. I unplugged the harneness and put the circuit back to factory and the problem is gone.
You have got to love GM. They tell everyone not to use an aftermarket bypass because it can cause issues. So they come out with their own bypass and it actually causes issues.
I have a 6 Speed and had the recall. GM reprogramed and installed another lock. Didnt feel comfortable so I bought a CLB from Corvettes of Houston for 49.00. Local Corvette Guru at the dealership told me that it was actually a smart thing to do.
Installed it this afternoon. There was a difference in wire color "orange" as it is white in my car.
GM is informing dealers who call technical assistance on this issue to remove the harness K on the A4's (with the white TYCO relay only) until further notice.

Ken is exactly correct... dealer did this exact operation to my 2000 A4
When the second dealer correctly diagnosed the problem I was having as a failure of the steering lock pin actuator the tech actually recommended the aftermarket bypass. Luckily I had one at home ready to install. They installed it for me when they were fixing the pin problem. No more problems to date.
