Default HELP!!! Creaking sound when a/c is on????

I have a strange problem. Whene A/C is on there is a creaking noise that is coming from the driver side dash. The noise sounds like a creaking screw that is being twisted back and forth. When I turn the A/C off it stops. It does not happen all the time but lately it is becomming more frequent. Please Help, it is driving me CRAZY

I have looked at a couple other posts and they say the bearing sounds like a loud constant squeel, this sounds like a DJ scratching an old record. This happens often but not all the time. SOmetimes I can turn the car off wait a couple of seconds and turn it back on and it is gone for days???? If it was the bearing wouldn't happen constant?

Thanks

Mike

I'd check to see if there is something stuck in the squirrel cage.. It's easy to pop the motor out and check.. I had leaves stuck in mine and it made a similar sound...

My bet is there is something stuck in there and as it hits the cage blades is making that sound... when you hear the sound next time...turn the fan speed up or down.. and see if it changes pitch.. If so then you nailed it...

Dude I realize you are trying to help but in the posts I see you reply in you suggest replacing stuff with no trouble shooting..

Let's Help troubleshoot the problem before suggesting belt changes..

and by the way.. nothing need to be replaced unless it cannot be fixed.. Including a Headlight motor....

Chuckster is correct!! The squirrl cage fan is a constant source of problems! There are no filters or screes in the HVAC intake area to prevent junk, and animals fron getting into that area! I had a Mouse build a nest in mine!!! Talk about noise!!!!

Here is what you are liiking at!

HVAC intake and squirrl cage fan

Fan motor in passengers foot well.

CAUTION!! fan is always HOT (+12 VDC ) and will spin on high speed if it is grounded!! Disconnect the battery or pull the fuse before removing the fan!!!!!

NOT THE MOTOR????

Let me re-describe the sound as explained by my neighbor who listened to also. It is like a creaking door sound and is only on when the a/c is on and intermittent and sounds center or toward the drivers side. Another thing that happens that may or may-not be part of the ptoblem is that somethime it has a loud clicking sound like a slipping gear sound that sounds like it is located neer the fire wall and is there with or without the a/c on and it to is intermittent.

I just purchased this vehicle a couple months ago and when I bought it it had an ac vaccum hose problem. The air would only come out of the defrost section and they sent it to a local corvette repair shop which I stay away from to have it fixed. The notes that came back with it was a vaccum hose on the outside of the car was causing the problem and it them worked, but these problems did not seem to be there until this was fixed. The air works fine other wise. Please let me know what you think this crazy noise is. I would take it back to the corvette guy who fixed it but I need new tires and you cant leave his shop for under 250.00 even for an oil change(OOUCH!!).

Thanks

Now it sounds like a damper door issue.. Especially with the vacuum probs you were having... Try hitting the MODE button to change the damper positions while the A/C blower is on..See it that is the noise you hear when it changes positions....

My Car Has Developed A Similiar Sound And Location But Mind Happens When The Key Is In And Turned To On Before You Start The Engine. It Will Stop But For 10, 15, 20 Seconds You Hear The Same Noise.

Your damper & doors move around to adjust when ever you start your car. If you have the memory package, it is adjusting the doors and dampers to your settings. If you have Duel Zone Climate controls there are even more doors and damoerd that can make noise. Try to adjust the temp and then the dampers to figure out which door or damper linkage is making the noise.

Your HVAC air box is complicated.

Try to narrow down what componet is moving when the noise is occuring and i will dive into the service manual and recommend something.

Thanks!! Took those at Carsile last year. The guy who had it was a salvager and had a complete C5 that had been wrecked diamantled. I take pictures of all of the C5 stuff that I can! It comes in real handy when fixing my own or helping someone on the forum.

Yep, I know that clicking sound.. My other car with Climate control did it.. I was sure it was an uncalibrated damper door.. What happened was the door would open or close all the way and the actuator thought it still had more travel... So the clicking was the actuator hammering the door until it timed out..

Noise came back this a.m. and i turned the pass. side hot cold dial and could make the noise louder and shofter and dissappear by turning this ****. Nothing else other than turning the system off changes the sound. It sounds like it is comming where the front defroster grill is located. If it is the doors, what is the solution? Is it fixable or does it need to be replaced$$$$$$$$$.

Mike

Turn the ignition to ON and have someone turn the **** to make the noise. See if you can zero in on the area/mechansim that is causing the noise. I wish that I could be of more assistance but, I have never (knock on wood) had to deal with HVAC issues other than a stopped up air box drain.
