Hard to answer your question without knowing what you want, whether you care about drivability, whether you have an A-4 or six speed.Too many unknowns to plug in a cam and get satisfactory results.
I have been looking into this as well. To keep drivability and also not have to change springs every 20K miles, I have been examining the option of only installing Crane 1.8 accelerated lift rockers. Seems that you can get close to a mild cam installation without all the headaches and having to open the motor. You might want to investigate this in parallel to examine your options. Some of the higher lift cams require spring changes every 20K miles or so, are noisier, may effect drivability (depends on what you pick).
you really don't gain that much from a cam only change. You'd be much better off putting in 342's and wait on the cam till you can do heads at the same time.
I don't agreee.....I have seen some pretty decent gains doing a cam only. Obviously a heads and cam are ideal, since you will need to upgrade the Valvetrain anyway. Over on the For sale section, Nextphsemarko is sell ing a MTI heads and cam package for like $1300!! thats a killer deal.
I just did a cam only install this spring. I got the Futral FM-13 (230/232 112). After the tune, I picked up 42hp at the rears!! It is a fairly 'large' cam but the driveability is great with the tune. And what a great sound!! Well worth it for me!!!
