Default High Speed Fan not Working

I have a 160 stat and run at most 198 in the summer months. Well the fan doesnt work today and sitting in traffic my coolant temps got to 235 but stayed around 225 in stop and go traffic.

Anyone else have there high speed fan go out? Its not the fuse cause I checked it. Anyone know how much a new fan will cost?

Are you sure its just one fan? Both fans operate together. They either both operate in low speed or both operate in high speed. You do have a high speed relay in the relay box next to the battery. I have had my high speed relay fail before. I replaced it and never had another problem.

Do you remember the relay number?

The fan on the battery side was working fine while the left one does not work at all. I guess the left fan motor crapped out. I was suprised that the temps did not get higher as I was in stop and stop longer traffic for almost 1 hour. The coolant temps never got to 235+, most of the time 221-228.

If youre sure the left fan is not running at all, then the right fan is probably not operating in low speed mode and only operating in high speed mode. Both fans operate through coolfan 1 relay at low speed. Coolfan 2 relay is for high speed operation for the right fan. Coolfan 3 relay energizes for high speed operation for the left fan. Your problem is either coolfan 1 relay is shot or the left fan motor is shot. All 3 relays are located in the relay/fuse box next to the battery. All 3 relays are exactly the same and are labeled on the underside of the cover. Make sure you pay attention to what direction they are plugged into the junction box. Replace coolfan 1 relay first, if that doesnt fix it, then the fan motor is shot. I think the part number of the relay is on it, i dont remember.

Well,,, here are some facts about the coolant fans:

Chassis grounds for both fans is G-102 which is located on the passengers side frame rail in the engine compartment. look at the area behind the head light and inboard of the area where the hood support mounts to the frame. The fuses are Maxi Fuse# 49 Maxi Fuse # 46 & Mini fuse# 14. All of the fuses need to work for the fans to work properly!!!

The relays are coolant Fan#1 Relay# 45, Coolant Fan# 2 Relay # 43 and Coolant fan # 3 relay# 44.

If all of that checks out, check the fan motor resistance and make sure that each fan is getting 12 VDC.

Thanks, I replaced the 44# relay and both fans work now.

It ended up being that connector thats not connected to the fan control module. The one that melts! thats the one to replace.
