It could be your spec clutch. I've heard that they chatter on some cars. My spec III never chattered. I hope it's this nad nothing major.

Is the noise coming from the rear of the car or in the transmission area. Mine has a 1st gear rumble or growl, not necessarily a gear grind. Mine definately comes from tranny and I have heard similar noise on others. BTW as far as I know mine is completely stock.

You may hear noise on a regular basis with that light flywheel. The heavier/stockers soak up a lot of that so they are quiet. You should hear a ZF6 with a Fidenza..Sounds like a damn diesel idling.

And at times under full throttle it can sound like the tranny is coming through the floor! I realize the C5 is a quite different, but the symptoms of light flywheels are very similar. Ask Mojo to see his in car vid of his 1/4 mi. pass on his 6 speed car: When he hits 4th gear I bet its a similar sound

Found the problem it was a bad pilot bearing. I can't believe a $10.00 part cost so much to put in at least i was able to look at the clutch and flywheel ( which are still in perfect condition)
