I'm changing my valve springs with the engine in the car, my tool is the the overhead screw type and it not working very well. It looks like the Crane #270-99472-1 or VHP type would work the best but its $108. Anyone have any luck with the Morso, proform stud mount type($50.) will work on the LS1 rear valves? Or the $12. KD tool?
I got the crane tool and it works great. It would not fit my AFR 205 heads because the rocker bosses are fatter on the AFR head. But 5 minutes on a mill fixed the problem. Just had to make the hole in the tool a little wider. Nice thing about the Crane tool is its low profile and it does two springs at a time.
Thanks for the replys, it looks like I will buy the Tim tool from LS1 tech for $30. shipped.
That's a great tool. It's simple to use and gets the job done fast. Order an extra stud though if possible. My stud has been through a single change and is looking a little rough.
I have a couple of tools now that are iffy at best with dual springs. I plan on buying the Crane tool, it just looks well constructed and is made for our motors. The other consideration is that with performance springs and cam, you will be changing springs again in the future so why not get the best tool for the job. Also, springs are subject to fatigue and any knicks or scratches will hasten their demise. This won't happen with the Crane tool.

I bought the More tool and love it. It's 1 spring at a time but it's so easy to use. Insert a breaker bar, pull (like a slot machine), and you're done. Paid $120 for it from Thunder Racing. It's for sale if interested.
