Chuck,

If you shorten an aftermarket shifter such as a Hurst to the same handle length, it will have approximately 35% shorter throws than the Vette shifter.

I have driven the stock C5 shifter, the new C6 shifter, and in my opinion, neither of them can hold a candle to a Hurst.

That looks sweet, I considered shortening my Ripper... But.. It was already hard enough to muscle around... That Shift **** you used is probably the only one you could get enough leverage on...

Soon you'll look like this..

I'm another fan of the Hurst shifter! I've been using it for two years now and works great.

I'm another Hurst shifter user. Use the lightest springs and it will still be far superior to the stock shifter and bearable if you get stuck in traffic. It's a stiffness that can be easily lived with because of the precise shifting feel. If you decide to make this purchase, buy it from Jegs mail order. Their price is about $70 to $80 cheaper than most Corvette mailorder houses.

Road Dog,

I am not sure if you are directing your comment to me, but here goes:

1) The shaft of the Hurst shifter is hardened steel. Therefore you will need to use a grinder or cutting wheel to remove the amount of the shaft that sticks above the key slot provided for the standard shift ****.

2) After you have removed approximately 1.0 inches of the Hurst shaft, you will need to have a 9/16 die to cut the threads downward another 1.0 inches. Because the shaft is hardened this will go very slowly. Be sure to use a very good Tap fluid. I broke a die and had to purchase a second die in order to finish the thread cutting.

3) After you have cut the additional threads, pick the shift **** you want to use. I am using a MGW Limited - www.mgwltd.com/corvette.html - 'Pistol Grip' chrome ****. I like it because it has a set screw to lock the position of the **** on the shaft.

Good Luck

I gave up my BPP for a C6 assembly, and am loving it.

Repeat this phrase ten times per day till you finally install it and all your shifts will come true.

Easy to drop in, very short and percise and the best part over a shortened OEM is the return spring, to pull it back to the middle for example when you go from 2nd, it will drop into 3rd 4th groove with the springs. Very small, very percise and very cool mod. Makes you car feal much more sporty every shift.

I have been in M6 with shortend OEM, very good, but I porefer the Hurst with the springs. I have sat in a 911TT with the OEM short throw option and it is lighter but not anywhere near as precise. Just my .02$

If you go with the C6, Id use Jennings Chevrolet in Chicago or Fred Beans in PA for a good price. (200.00 for the shifter & ****) Dont forget to order the screw that is used with the C6 shifter **** or you will have to make a trip to the hardware store.
that kinda dough, definately Get the Hurst,
there is no great stock shifter Ive had 4, 6- speeds all the stock shifter
are poor, compare them out the car and there cheap and the c-6 shifter is going to be less
in the c-5, the Hurst is great shifter

Which hurst is it? The billet/plus shifter? There are a bunch of options on jegs web page. The billet/plus is $169 from jegs and $259 from Mid-America. Is this the same shifter??

The one on jegs is listed as 1997-2001 corvette, but if it fits 1997-01, it will fit 02-04 as well, right? there were no changes to the car in those years, right?

The BPP and Hurst are very similar in feel. Both have adjustable side-to-side resistance (changing springs) and both have that bolt-action, direct feel. The big difference between the two is adjustability. The angled BPP arm assembly offers 16 different combinations of positions to suit virtually ANYone's physique. You can angle the arm so that your reach is just right. The Hurst's single position is okay, but if you like things to be "just right", it's tough to beat the BPP.

The Hurst is a bit less expensive, so it is a tough choice to make.
Here's my BPP:

Same here. Used to have Hurst but it's too stiff to me. I cut out 1" from the stock shifter and like it much better.

Hey guys, I've had 'em all and Chuckster's modified stock shifter is by far the best.....no noise, no rattling, shortest shift possible AND, you'll never miss a shift. Plus, you don't need Arnold's arm to shift it. And it's like it knows where to go. Just rip off those shifts...snick, snick, snick.....you'll never miss a shift.

Also, the aftermarket shifters force more leverage onto your tranny and in time this will take it's toll.

My daily driver is a 2005 WRX STI with the $400.00 short shift option, which the car rags love. It's pretty good, but there is absolutely no comparison to my highly modified stock shifter.

I went all the way to Chuckster's fourth stage maximum shifter version on his original instructions posted here a few years ago. Mine looks like his except I have the Gripper **** (same one that's in Tony Stewart Nascar). Zip Products carries The Gripper.

Best part is it's free if you do it yourself. Or, if you're like me and don't have the time, just take the instructions to your favorite mechanic.....takes about an hour of labor.....

It's Soooo bitchen

Thanks Chuckster
