Default Need an answer to my diff question ASAP

Quick question: can a 2.73 diff be rebuilt with 3.73 gears or are there some major differences that limit this?

Thanks.

Thanks DTE. Someone just told me you need a spacer for the 2.73 and it would be better to get a 3.15 or 3.42 diff as a core. What is this about?

There is that and a couple of other modifications required to make this type of 2-series differential work properly and live for HP use.

We can do it for you if you wish.

I don't think I would trust one with the shim/spacer in it. The problem is also with the housing. The VSS sensor is in the wrong spot. The shim has teeth in it like the ring gear but, by running a shim you lose the press of the gear on the carrier and you are required to run longer ring gear bolts which just weakens it. It would be better to start with a 3:15 assembly first. The next problem is you will need to have tuning for the shift pionts in the tranny.

People have been saying this forever and there is NOT a "problem" with a coverted 2-series differential when built properly with our special procedures we have implemented here.

We have been converting 2-series differentials with any gear ratio of choice for HP street & racing use for three years now with outstanding success in performance and durability, despite everyone saying, "it can't be done reliably", "it won't work", "it's weaker", what-have you......... We also build differentials for many of the tuners behind the scenes for their customer's cars, in addition for many folks on this board~ both 2 and 3-series with many of them living heathly lives on the drag strip.

Do whatever you wish, but don't allow miss-information such as this scare you away from doing what you want to do. (no dis-respect intended to the poster) We have the experience here to do the job *RIGHT* and our positive reputation of building HP differentials has already been proven time and time again.

Many people have stated that a 2-series differential can't be built reliably~ we've proven them wrong over and over again many times...

FYI if you're interested.
