I did a search but came up empty on this problem. When I turn my lights off, they both down, but the one on the drivers side comes back up and stays up. I also have to turn the headlights on twice to get them both to stay up. Anyone seen this problem before?
My only problem with this car back in Feb. 00. Took car in under warrant and they replaced the Actuator Motor, Pt# 16530235. From what I remember this was happening a lot, the real fix was to replace a plastice gear in the motor assembly, that was a lot cheaper than the whole assembly.
I recently had the same exact symptoms for a few weeks then the actuator motor started acting up big time. When I turned on the headlights, only the passenger side came up and it took several attempts before both came up. They went down OK.
Then they started coming up OK but when I would turn the lights off, they would go down but the drivers side seemed and sounded like it was running on for about 20 seconds, grinding the gears.
The dealer said the actuator went bad and it was replaced.
When the motor problem got really bad the lights would pop up when the parking lights were turned on. The dealer said this was a computer glitch and they apparently did something to the programing when they replaced the actuator and everything is fine again.
You can wait until it completely goes or maybe it can be salvaged. Mine finely went on a road trip. I went to a dealer on the road because the car was under warranty but they didn't act like they were very interested in helping. So I continued the trip with the grinding gears until I got home - it never completely failed but by then the whole actuator needed to be replaced.

there are two issues that I had to solve to fix the same problem. First, there are metal tabs with plastic insulation that control the stop/start and closing locations for the headlamp. The lever that is controlling the stop point is causing undue wear on the hard plastic insulation piece that goes over the metal tab (very bottom). Need to replace any worn hard plastic insulation parts. Next there was a GM tech spec that indicated that to the wear ....remove the headlight motor and place washers (3 are needed) between the motor and the frame supporitng the motor. I have done both of these and it seems to fix the "wink".
PN for the hard plastic is GM # 16524060 they cost about $5 ea at the dealer...real rip as they cost about 1 cent to make

Send me a copy for future reference, since I plan to keep this car!

Doug, I used the information you provided and it worked like a charm! I was able to add the washers and revearse my insulators and swap them so that the impact side on the damaged one did not face the linkage. Thanks a lot, guys like you are the reason this forum is so great. To the other guys who have had problems with headlight gears, I would recommend that you search the forum for information on brass gears.
Thanks to all for the replies.
