Default Help! Gas leak...

I also posted in General, but thought there might be folks here that can help...

OK, so I take the vette in for the leaky butt syndrome. They said they couldn't find the source of the leak, even though I told them EXACTLY where to look. Fine, I'll wait till it leaks faster, so I take it home and now I smell gasoline! I put it up on ramps and under the left tank is an aluminum pan with little slots cut into it, and they are damp with gasoline...not dripping mind you, but weeping enough to keep them damp with a little gas hanging wanting to drip.

I thought maybe they put gas in and spilled some through the overflow, so I ran about 50 gallons of water through the overflow (the drain under the fuel filler) to rinse the fuel from whereever it goes. Water ran out from those same slits in the aluminum pan...I drive it to dry the water out and this morning it is still reeking to high heaven of gasoline.

So...what to do? Take it in??? ANyone have anything like this? If I drop the wheel well liner can I see what's going on? Anyone know how accessible the hoses to the left tank are with the wheel well out? Is it easy enough to pull the wheel well out? Or will the tank need to be dropped? I really, really don't want to take it to the dealer if I don't absolutely HAVE to. If it means anything, it's an '04 coupe..

ANY advice at this stage would be a great thing...

Thanks in advance!

Have you replaced the fuel pump or otherwise messed with the rubber gasket that is on the left tank?

Also be careful about pouring anymore water there. If gas is getting out, that means water might be able to get in. Just a thought.

Sounds like the o-rings in the crossover pipe. Our gas tanks are in 2 pieces - left/right and joined by a crossover pipe with pretty weako-rings (so the dealer told me). If you are still under warrantee, the dealer will cover it. Most of the times when they replace the o-rings it doesn't always work, so they opted to replace the whole tank setup on mine.

Out of curiosity, did you add some additives to the tank recently? and maybe you didn't fill-up immediately? I have a feeling that any additives like injector cleaners eat away at the o-ring quickly if you don't wash it down by filling up with gas. Justy my thoughts, no facts to base it on.

No, no additives recently...two tankfulls ago I added techron to straighten out my gauge, but I added it to a full tank, and had no problems since. Also, haven't messed with the fuel pump or tank at all. Never been into the fuel system for anything...
