Default C1286 and engine performance

Does the C1286 when tripped affect engine performance? My car has been tripping this code for awhile and I assumed it wouldn't affect performance. I've been chasing other bugs and am wondering if this might be the root of my problem.

C1286 Steering Sensor Bias Malfunction

This shouldn't cause any performance reductions, what kind of problems are you trying to troubleshoot?

It's been a long dragged out H/C and exhaust swap. Some details are explained here:

I'm just trying to make sure the C1286 code isn't causing my problem before I continue trouble shooting.

Did you have the steering shaft removed/disconnected during the swap. If so, the voltage is off for the sensor and the sensor is not making parity with the AH system. If you get it every time you go above 10 mph, that is the problem and it is turning AH off. No effect on the engine.

I did have the steering shaft off during the swap but I'm pretty sure I got it back in the same location. I was getting the c1286 code before I did the swap and will fix sooner of later just wanted to make sure that wasn't complicating my other problems.
