To refresh, I took my '04 coupe in for leaking gas and differential yesterday. Today they called to tell me than my Vette has a cracked left gas tank, somewhere on top where there is a seam. Don't have a picture, but I'm trying to get one. They said it'll be a week while they order me a new gas tank... And while they have the bottom dropped out for the tank, they're going to replace that leaky seal.

I had this happen on my car during delivery. The salesmen filled the fuel tanks for the first time and the right tank started to leak like a bandit! This was also when I discovered that the C5 has two tanks...something I did not previously know. I spoke to the mechanic who fixed it and he told me that this problem, if it occurs, generally shows up when the car is new.
The seam that leaks is at the top of the tank where the equalizing tube, which connects the two tanks, attaches to the tank itself. This tube is what allows fuel to flow between the two tanks when filling the car up. There is a molded fitting where the tube inlet attaches to the tank and the leak generally occurs on that seam right where it meets the tank itself. The seam was most likely cracked during the molding process. The mechanic just put another new Z06 on the lift and took the passenger side tank out and replaced mine with it and that was that.
They told me that they had never seen ithis problem before and I assume it is not a very common issue.
Hope this gives you some perspective and info on what happened to your car...sounds similar to what happened to my car.
My 04 is having a leaky left tank fixed right now. It didn't show up until 12 mths and 19k miles after I bought it. They have to take EVERYTHING out to get to the tank. The whole drive train comes out.....
Over 10 hours labor total. They said if it were not a warrenty issue, i would be looking at 2k to have fixed.

I heard they were a pain to replace but I never figured you had to remove the driveline.
Thanks for the info, makes me feel a little better knowing I'm not the only one. strange that you have to remove the drivline! Anyone ever see a diagram of the tank system?
My 04 also has a cracked tank and is in the process of being replaced. What a nightmare! The car has 11600 miles and has many problems. It is a fun car to drive but alot of aggravation. I hopefully will get the car back on Monday- it has been in the shop since Thursday.
I was smelling gas in the garage on my 04 and took it to the shop.
It turned out to be a leak in the tank, and they had to keep it for eight days. The transmission on mine had to dropped as well, and they didn't put it back together right. I got stranded at a shopping center the day after picking it up, and they said the linkage was wrong. It didn't realize the thing was in park and would not start. I hope your repair goes better than mine.
Reason number 47 that indicates MY 2002 was probably the "best" of the C5 breed. GM used 2004 (and part of 2003) MY's to "experiment" in preparation for the C6. The next time you meet a C6 owner, tell he/she owes you thanks!
Sorry to hear about the problems!
