But ... the link did not work... and I read what the code said in the code sheet... but what do I do to fix it... I do 99% of my own work.. but.. I do not know where to start... Is it a bad pump somewhere... or is is a bad connection... fuse?...what.. Help...
Amen brother. I've had the same code for a while now and don't have the money to replace the ECBM (somewhere around $1,000 for the part). It started intermittently, but now whenever I clear the code, it comes back within a second or two. I've tried disconnecting each speed sensor at the wheels and squirting them down with electrical cleaner, but to no avail. My only other fiscal option is to try locating and cleaning the grounds that Bill has laid out for us. Not real excited about that.
I believe my ECBM is located above my rear axle, from what I could see.
Where do I look... where are the grounds... As it is not on all the time.. it may be a bad ground. It has not come on in 2 days. So it is hard to know when I clean the ground if it is fixed, right away or not.
There are Front and Rear mounted EBTCM (Electronic Brake Traction control Modules) The rear mounted modules are on 97 & 98 (early cars). Late 98 moved to the front!!!
Here is a pristene example of a Rear mounted EBTCM.
HERE IS THE MOTOR with the ground terminal!!
The ground for the rear mounted EBTCM is on the passengers side rear frame rail in the rear wheel well area. It will look something loke this:
My stud broke off and I had to replace it with a screw.
Here is the front mounted EBTCM on a 01 Coupe.
If you look closly, you can see it below the radiator hose.
Here is the ground for the FRONT Mounted EBTCM G-101.
It is on the drivers side frame rail in the engine compartment. Look next to the area where the left hand hydraulic hood support is bolted to the frame.
Also check out this post on ground cleaning and electrical issues!!
I will check it out... and hope for the best.... Now if you could just tell me why... when my fuel gage goes empty...at about 1/2 tank.... and I shift in to neutral (I have a A4) the gage will start reading again... Thanks a lot for all the help...
That tells me you either have one of the following:
Corroded/ bad ground G-401
Corroded/bad electrical connection at the drivers or passengers fuel tank electrical connections
OR
An EXTREMELY dirty fuel tank level sensing resistor. Here is a picture of a GM fuel level sensor (non C5) :
If you look closely, you can see how any sort of dirt or contamination can cause a bad connection.
Have you tried on of the better fuel system cleaners like Chevron Techron or Red Line?? It may take a few treatments but, that is something that you need to do.
This is an excellent link. Is there a link like this (trouble shooting guide) for the C1214 or C1287 code? I would like to troubleshoot this myself, before paying the dealer an arm and a leg.
Bill,
Thanks for clearing up the location of the EBTCM for me. Since mine is a '00, it must be in the front. I hope it is something simple like a frayed wire in the harness, because I don't have the money to purchase a new EBTCM! Thanks again,
-JP
I was getting repeated 1281 steering malfunction codes and the suggestion was made to clean and reseat the rear mounted EBTCM plug as shown in one of Bill's pics. I also cleaned all of my grounds. No more codes!
