Default Climate control numbers keep fading out

On my 2000 C5. (Not the clock) The numbers that display the interior heat or cool temp. keep fading out very dim. If I tap on the plastic cover then they get brighter but then dim out again. Whats the fix. Forget the chev dealer how can I fix it?

Default HVAC Repair

I sent mine to a guy in MN for repair. He is Dave Ruberg at 507-429-4489, and gives a 5-year guarantee on his overhaul.

Very Common problem on the c5...There are a couple of outfits that repair them for anywere from $40-75. Do a search here on CF and their names should pop up. The other way is buy a new one from GM parts direct, they have the best price I found. Around 200 if I remember correctly.

A few people have popped them out and repaired the broken solder joints which is what I plan on doing.

It is a common problem.
Unless the car is still under warranty it is your issue... no recalls

A new GM replacement is $380 at most dealers. Fred Beans will sell you a new one about $100 cheaper

eBay and CF vendors sell used ones NO GUARANTEE for about $150-165

There are two vendors on ebay that repair them.

I used David Ruberg aka digitalguy_1@charter.net
$40.99 eBay buy it now. the repair comes with a 5 year guarantee
I am a 100% satisfied customer and can highly recommend his work and turn around time

There was a posting on a home solder repair about 3-4 weeks ago...
You might try a search on Blue Diodes IF I recall correctly

There are 8 chips that need to be resoldered. The were so poorly soldered on that touching them made them fall off the board. Do a search and it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes after it's removed. Worked great on mine!
