Default Oil For Racing

Those of you that autocross and/or roadrace:
1. What brand oil and viscosity do you use?
2. Do you overfill slightly before a driving event since you will be running at high rpm for extended amounts of time?
3. What oil filters are best?
4. How high does your oil temp get during your driving event (stock C5/Z06 without oil cooler or radiator mods).
Thanks in advance for any and all comments.

I use Mobil 1 5-30 and GM Filter. I do fill it up 1/2 quart more before racing at a road race, but for 1/4 mile racing I leave it at the fill line.

I do change my oil right before an event though so I ahve fresh oil. Not sure if it matters, but I feel better about it.

If you are doing road racing make sure you check your tire pressure too. When I ran Pocono Long course I ran around 35 PSI. After every race I checked them and noticed the right side tires weree around 40 PSI while the left side increased to about 38 PSI. They should be adjusted back to even before your next race.

Be safe - have fun...

1. Mobil 1 10W30. It never gets cold enough here to go to 5W30. Considering Amsoil 0W30 too, based on extensive use in SCCA by 'vette drivers.
2. Yes. half a quart, but I do it because the oil pickup can get starved on high speed turns.
3. Not sure. I use Mobil 1
4. I've seen 285 degrees during hard laps in 100+ ambient weather.

I make sure there's relatively fresh oil in for the track day, and change it when it gets black (generaly it's pretty dark after a weekend). I change filter and oil at the same time, always.

Mobil 1 15-W50, 10 1/2 quarts with 3qt accusump, cooler, and extra lines.

ACDelco PF46 filter, tried several other and oil pressure went too high,

Oil temps 250 normal and 255 under extreamly hot abient temps and track temps.

Change oil every 2 events or about 500 miles. DIC goes from 100% down to 70% after first weekend then down to 30% after second weekend.

Note: did one weekend on 15-w50 extended formualtion and car run 10*hotter and took longer to warm up the oil. So now going to use Mobil 1 0-W40r normal sythtic. few additives.

We have used Redline 10W40 in all the street-track cars for the past ten years. The 5w30 GM suggest is not exactly right for a motor. They have to past all sorts of test and fuel mileage. They do cold weather starts, and all sorts of other stuff. Run a heavier weight oil for track events.

John,
Oil:
AMSOIL Series 2000 0w30 in cool weather (this oil meets GM Standard 4718M for the C5/Z06)
AMSOIL Series 2000 20w50 in the heat of the Memphis summer (this oil is too thick to meet GM Standard 4718M)
AMSOIL also makes a AMSOIL SAE 10w40 Synthetic High Performance Motor Oil for those willing to operate outside the warranty requirements.
Filter: AMSOIL SDF32 which has high flow without sacrificing filtration compared to other leading filters.
AMSOIL SDF Oil Filter
Tranny:
AMSOIL ATF
Diff:
AMSOIL Severe Gear Extreme Pressure Synthetic 75w90

My car also has a three quart accusump and an oil cooler, so I don't need to overfill my oil, but for those running without an accusump, I do recommend running one quart over every track session as recommended in the video that came with the Z06 to prevent oil starvation due to uncovering the oil pickup point in high G turns.

My oil normally runs between 250-270 on the track with the cooler, but routinely ran near 300 prior to me installing a cooler.

My tranny also has a cooler. Prior to adding the tranny cooler, I also routinely got tranny high temp warnings (which comes in at about 274 or so). Now with the cooler, even in 100+ degree days for 40 minute SCCA T1 races, I don't get the warning.

I change my oil about every four track days, which is about every 500 miles, and change my tranny and diff fluid about double that interval.
