took the baby out for a ride and noticed the passenger side view mirror (on the door) swinging in the breeze! I got home and removed the mirror and the plate behind it that is controlled by the electronics and can see a large spring and a round washer thing that looks as if it slips over the post from the door mount part...question is, how the heck do you depress that spring to attach that clip washer? can it be done without removing the entire mirror? that spring has some serious compression strength that the finger tips alone can't seem to depress...
I posted this in March of 2003. I don't know if they still do this repair, but I would give them a call if I were you .

I've read several write ups in mags about this including Corvette Fever, All say that the mirror has to be replaced. This is what is recommended by GM service as well. Sounds like the info listed above is your best bet vs buying a new one.
I have a free fix for this problem. Go to 7-11 & get a book of cardboard matches. Seriously. Carefully remove the mirror over the tube,(there is enough play in the wires to do this), fold the cardboard over and wedge it between the inside of the mirror and tube & gently twist it down, until it reaches bottom. I had both of my mirrors break. I tried velcro, etc. Didnt want to glue it. The repair holds for quite some time even when you wash the car. Good Luck

The guy's name is Ed Swanech. He's done both of mine (at different times) on my '98 Vert. Send him the whole mirror assembled. Not too hard to remove even for the mechanically challenged. Highly recommended!
BTW, replacing the mirror doesn't fix the problem. The shaft metal is too soft and the spring too strong! Go with Ed's fix!
