I would be so damned mad at Best Buy if I were you. I had a Kenwood HU isntalled and it's fine with the stock speakers. I just added an amp and sub. At this point, I'd be back at BB raising holy total hell about it.
(Oooops...didn't see your recent post about taking out the entire system. Hope it all works out for you.)
Well, I will admit, I was very unhappy with Best Buy because I didn't see why it should sound so bad with a new head unit and new speakers. Granted, I didn't get the most expensive equipment but I still felt like they should have been able to make it work and sound at least decent. But I think going there was my first mistake. I actually went back there today and did raise hell. So I'm having them take out everything they did and I'm just going to return it all and then have Tweeter install the system I described in my last post. Too bad I won't get refunded for the "custom work" Best Buy did (whatever the hell that was). Anyway, like I said, I wish I hadn't even gone there now. I feel like the Tweeter store sells much higher quality equipment and the people there are much more technically proficient.
How did they mount the speakers in the doors? If then didn't seal up the speaker hole around the speakers they will sound like crap with no bass, and a lot of time rattle pretty badly causing a raspy sound. Sit a speaker on the table with no enclosure and turn it up and you will see how bad it sounds. The area inside the door acts like a speaker box and should be fairly well sealed. I have seen lots of photos on the forum where people took a piece of wood and cut it fit exactly like the factory speaker, then cut a hole in the middle of it to mount the new speaker. This keeps the door sealed up really well.

Well, to be honest, I have no idea how the Best Buy people mounted the speakers. Like I said in my very first post, I was originally just trying to replace the factory receiver (not knowing that the after-marker receiver wasn't compatible with the Bose speakers). So when they called up and said I needed new front speakers, I just went and picked some out on the spot without any chance to research. Then they charged me all that money for "custom labor" but never really explained what they did. I think the problem was, they didn't really know what they were doing.
hey bill
if space is an issue 2 8s in the doors would be sufficient
however you will probably need to change the head unit due to the fact that the bcms processor limits the 3.5 from playing any lower than 350 hz and the proper frequency for subs is around 80 hz and lower
80 to 350 hz is crucial for vocals in other words barry white would sound like clay akins without the 80 to 350 hz frequency range
so keeping the stock head unit would mean the rear speakers would only be able to play the 80 to 350 hz loss you would have in the front
putting the aftermarket hu allows full range signal to all speakers so you gain your frequency in the front back and have a nice full range sound system without the need for a box in the rear
also some good seperate tweeters in the front door handle pulls will dramatically help the soundstage on the high end of the frequency range
all this would probably run around 750 for the whole kit and kaboodle
or you can have a box in the trunk and it would probably cost less
