My buddy has a 97 C5. (ony 22k on the odmeter) Car is in new condition.
When you start he car when its cold, this message comes up. (Pull key wait 10 seconds) It also goes back and shows the vehicle miles. If you try to drive the car, the car will stall.
When the car has warmed up and you restart the car, it seems to be ok..
We have checked grounds from one end of the car to the other. pulled all wiring harnesses we could find and cleaned all the connections..
ANY help would be appreciated.... This is one big PITA!!

Find out if it has a column lock bypass (CLB) installed. Some 97/98 models had problems with the CLB and the body control module (BCM). My 98 did the same thing with a CLB installed. If this car is an auto trans car, check to see if the recall has been done. Some of the harnesses were defective and caused the "Pull key..." message. Dirty key pellets have been known to cause issues as well.
Whenever I've got the "Pull key and...." message, it's because I had gotton the key wet. This screws up the resistance reading so the computer thinks somebody may be stealing the car. When I got the engine started, I also got the "Service Column Lock" message even though I have a CLB installed. Somebody previously said that the computer thinks the column is still locked and kills the engine if you try to drive, even in reverse. It appears that the computer does this through the ignition key mechanism also, although this seems strange. But it does explain why I got both messages with a wet key. After waiting a couple minutes after drying the key with a rag, she started and ran normally.
I am sorry. Guess I wasn't clear. I should have said cold start. Doesnt matter time of the year.
Was told last night it happens when it is warm also, but infrequently though.....
Thanks again.
Oh yeah, I seemed to have left a point out.. Seems the problem was happening infrequently prior to having taken to a dealership to fix the CLB.. It became constant AFTER the a trusty Dealership did the CLB repair.... When it was returned to fix it, the service department refused to acknowledge any responsibility and would not repair the problem..
Go GM!!!!

My 97 vette would do that when I left the top off in the summer and it would get hot.
And yes most of the time I would get the steering column lock and could not move the car also. Dealer replaced the unit twice and still had the same problem. Latest replacement (bypass) works great.
Trick (If the steering column locks when starting , take the key out pull the steering wheel down with your right hand at the 1 oclock position to the 3 oclock position while starting) works everytime..
Learned it after being stranded the third time for hours...
