It's not a big deal. At least, not to a LS1. I wouldn't do it on my Mazda.
I don't understand... I hit the darn rev limiter all of the time on my Miata while autocrossing... until I started watching the tach! Man does it fall on it's face...
I do seriously try to avoid it, but dang it still happens once in a while...
I was just worried about valvetrain damage. With a MN6 in first it gets to redline so fast that if your not paying close attention you will hit and sit on the rev limiter for a sec or two. I have had it pop about 4 or 5 times and it doesn't sound good to the engine but I guess it's better that going over. It's never a problem with any other gear, just first.
In the Tremec T-56 that is in the Z06, when downshifting and missing 4th and going into 2nd, no rev limiter will protect you there. Just on the way up.
When you hit the rev limiter what does it sound like ?
Does it sound like your engine is miss firing ....like bad points in a older car ?

I guess I've hit the limiter a couple of times, because that is exactly what I get. Honestly, I'm not yet familiar with the car so that my ear can tell when I've hit the limit and need to shift from first to second. And my eyeballs are kind of glazed from the acceleration. Yeah, this is my first Z06 vette.......... The HUD doesn't really help me, because I'm looking down the road and that is where my concentration is.
So is that what I am hearing? The rev limiter kicking in? I was thinking the ignition was breaking down at the higher RPMs. Now this has only happened twice to me, so it's not like it's an every day thing. It just winds up so FAST in first that I'm just not ready when I should be. Just need to practice more I guess and get my ears tuned to where the shift point should be.
