Anyone know where this open tube goes? I can't believe that it is just open to the atmosphere. If you look at the Vararam intake, the tube enters the intake AFTER the filter. Is it suppose to be like this?
nope... i may be wrong here, but follow the tube that is on the back of your drivers side valve cover on the top. there is a ventalation there with a tube in it. I think that connects to the air filter. Basically it isn't hurting anything, but i think it is where the crankcase is supposed to ventilate to.
I checked out under the FRC on the drivers side, and didn't see anything that looked disconnected. On the back side of my driverside valve cover is what looks like a rubber plug that is flush with the valve cover.
This is on a Z06 by the way. (don't know if it makes a diffrence).
That is for your smog AIR pump. That should go to a connection on the exhaust manifold by way of another rubber hose. Can you send another pic of manifold?

With what he said.. Looks like you've had a "hack" wrenching on your car.
Yes, it is hurting something, allowing unfiltered air to enter your intake! Not good.
The rest of that hose leeds up to the AIR tubes / check valves mounted on your exhaust manifolds.. If the exhaust isn't stock, they may have simply pulled the AIR tubes off, w/o addressing this issue.
At a minimum, you should cap off the end of that hose ASAP, and figure out what's going on. Hopefully your "mechanic" isn't a good freind.
I thought that the air pump sends air into your exhaust system during the start up/warming as part of the emissions system. It draws the air through the line that is plugged into the top of your filter giving filtered air to the pump. you can probably find the other end of that hose a little aft of where you found the open end and plug them back together.
That is your air pump hose.. I am sure whoever left that disconnected has plugged it on the manifold.. otherwise you would notice one hell of a an air leak.. furthermore.. the codes must have been disabled if this is left open or you would have a code popping up.
I bought the car like this. I am guessing there are no problems with just capping this hose off since it has been running open with no problems (codes). Where would the air pump be located? I am not sure it even still has any smog equipment. It has long tube headers made by TPIS. The car was modded pretty heavily by the previous owner, and I'm just trying to sort things out.

If you have no codes I would not give it another thought. If you follow that hose down under the bumper there.. you wll find the air pump. If that hose is disconnected you can actually just take the pump and that line out. I have it disabled in my Z, no issues.. the pump will be out after the next round of things I have planned.

GUYS GUYS GUYS..
He has an unfiltered air supply / past the filter. PLEASE STOP TELLING HIM "NO CODES - NO PROBLEMS".
"oupike1757", please take my adivse.. Plug the end of that hose off or do what I did, go to Lowes, find a plastic plug of the proper diameter (seemed to remember it being a 1" hole) and glue / seal it into the Vararam intake. Mine came out really nice, you barely notice the black plastic plug. Too bad I didn't think to order the Vararam w/o the hole in it.
My guess is if you've been running this car in this condition for a period of time, your throttle body will probably be dirty.
Ok, I've got a BPP Vortex Rammer, & mine is open on this end. What's up with that? Any problems from that?
This applies to your situation as well.

I would also plug it or hook it back up.it was put there for a reason from the factory. You could have my friends luck he had a tube like that and somehow a rock got in his motor. I dont know how but it did better safe than sorry.

There should be additional lengths of hose that continue to route the connection back towards the master cylinder, then down around the bottom contour of the MC. It turns back towards the front of the car, then up and connects to another small filter that is connected to the engine by an aluminum tube.
Sorry for the generic terms, I’m not a mechanic and my digital camera is in for repairs or I would have provided pictures. Good luck with your repairs.
The one connected to the air cleaner goes to the air pump and it appears to be connected at the top (to the air cleaner). The question is - is it connected to anything under the lower access panel in front of the drivers front tire? Take that panel off and look at it there. It's probably either still connected to the air pump or unplugged from it and plugged.
The other picture on the frame with the tube disconnected goes to your headers/exhaust manifold. I wouldn't worry about that one - check what is going on at the air pump connection which is probably plugged somehow to prevent it sucking any (unfiltered) air. Plugging it there would fix the problem if everything is connected underneath (at the pump) - but if it were mine, I'd like to know if it had been sucking unfiltered air so I'd definitely check it at the pump.
As a simple test, have smeone start the car and rev it a little while you put your finger over the end of that open tube to see if you feel any vacuum.
