This is the second car that I heard of that had this happen. This is why I am very carefull when shifting the gears at high RPM. I am glad to hear you are ok and you can hopefully get your car fixed on the insurance money soon.
Im sorry bout your problem, but im kinda not glad i read this post, i have a SPEC stage 3 plus waiting to be installed at home
do yourself a favor and have it balanced before you install it. i ended up having mine balanced after developing a vibration during "break-in" period. pilot bearing was destroyed, so figured why not balance clutch since i had it off.
pressure plate now has a 1" x .5" x .5" weight welded on! cost me $150, but least i know for sure now its in balance.

Car never had any vibration,..or any warning signs.
I am afraid of clutch/pressure plate explosions as well so I installed the collar type device from Vinci that fits on top of the bellhousing after my last Exedy install. I've got to say it is a biyatch to install the collar but it does give me a degree of comfort that maybe that damn thing will save my feet one day.
I was telling my sister-in-law who loves her Vette about this thread. She works in a high level claims related position for an insurance company.
Her advice was to make sure that you get any offers or statements that the insurance company makes in writing.
She said that insurance companies make statements that can be used to your advantage but the if the statement is not in writing you have no evidence.
A friend had his motorcycle damaged and he was promised all sorts of repairs (to get the bike to the same condition it was in - i.e. new) by the insurer. After making the promises to my friend the insurer decided to change their mind and limit their cash outlay. Now my friend is having a legal battle which is costing him money and alot of headaches.

Hope everything works out for you.
Glad to see that you were not injured.
k,...so far, they haven't said anything except that they weren't going to cover it but,..after numerous phone calls,...from alot of "techs" in high places,..they came back out, with all kinds of investingating people(investigateing me) and recorded me,...asked alot of questions, and told me they would contact me.
I'm still waiting on there call,...
thanks for the input man,...i'll let you know how it goes, as I should know by early next week.
It's getting kinda crazy not haveing a car,..and i'm single,...so it's not like I have other means of a ride but,...i've been getting by.
Wow! What rotten luck. Glad to hear you're ok. Try to find a metalurgist in your area. If it was in Michigan here they are all over the place. Buy him/her a beer and explain what happened. Sometimes they can examine the fracture areas and tell you exactly what happened. Kinda like CSI Miami. Good Luck!!!

The Vinci collar is good protection against the flywheel coming off and luckily I have not heard of that happening with our C5s yet.
The collar will NOT however provide any protection from the kinds of explosions that have been experienced when the clutch/bell housing explodes.
Here's hoping you or anyone else ever actually needs protection from these disasters.
One of my biggest fears with this car. High HP configurations and no way to add a armored bell housing and a no one I know of makes a blanket that will fit.
first off, glad you are ok.
wondering why you can't add a clutch shield like this one from vinci high performance
The part pictured here is specifically for protection against a flywheel that comes free and will not provide any protection against a bell housing explosion.
So far I have not heard of any flywheels giving way on our C5s only several bell housing explosions including my own.
I have got to respectfully disagree. While it is true that a collar sitting on top of a bell housing cannot protect against all angles of shrapnel paths from an explosion, it does help limit the size of the shrapnel, and, when coupled with the typical headers ensemble, I think it does provide an adequate limitation of the path that shrapnel could fly and injure. To me, the reciprocating mass, and it's inherent path are at an upwards angle and not straight back.
Bottom line to me, and the reason that I went with the collar, is that one would never know until the dreaded moment strikes whether or not the collar provided enough protection. Since the problem is documented and can occur, it seems reasonable to me, anyway, that some protection is better than none.
