Default engine/powerstearing&breaks shutoff

this has happened twice in the past months - as im driving the engine will stop, the rpms and all the gauges will drop to 0 and the power stearing and breaks will stop, i turn the car back on and everything is fine and keep driving? any ideas what could be causing it, also sometimes when im starting in first the shifter will pop out sometimes

I used to have an Oldsmobile that developed that nasty habit. It turned out to be the crankshaft sensor going bad. As for popping out of first gear you may not be getting it all the way in to gear when you stop. You should feel the transmission bump twice when you are sliding the lever into first. If you only feel the first point then it will pop out of gear when you start moving.

You need to check the DIC for any storred codes and post them here. Once you do that we will be able to help you.

the check engine light is on and it has the code that refers to the gas line leak or something which the guy at pep boys or whatever told me it is 90% of the time the gas cap is loose, when i took my car into the dealership they tested it and didnt find anything wrong so they turned off the light it is back on now, i dont kno if that could be causing it

PEP BOYS? You don't need no stinking PEP BOY to read your codes!!!!

You have a built in Self Diagnostics system!! You can read and clear your own codes!

Here is an early birthday present for you.

Check out this web site:

This is the absolute best C5 Code web site!!!

http://www.corvettedoctor.com/index.html

http://www.corvettedoctor.com/index-1.html

http://www.corvettedoctor.com/Code_Main.html

The sound effects are cool too!!

Post the codes that are present. Make sure that you include the H and or C in the codes

Clear all of the codes and see what comes back. When the engine dies, before you start it, read and post the codes. You could have a loose or corroded battery connection. Start there. Clean and torque the terminals back on the battery to 11 ft/lbs.

What year car is it??
