Why is it nessary to change the coolant in a ls1? I have never changed the coolant in any of my vehicles. From what I've read coolant doesn't wear out, so why change it Or is the dex-cool different? Is it good enough to just drain the radiator and refill or do I need to drain the block too? My car has 9300 miles on it but it's a 2000.
I did plan on changing the break fluid this spring so, can I just open the bleaders one wheel at a time and pump it out that way?
Thanks for the help
Dex-cool doesn't need to be changed as often as conventional coolant, only at 5 yrs or 50,000 miles, but all coolant should be changed periodically at regular intervals. Even if the engine seems to be running fine temp-wise, there are corrosion inhibitors that prevent damage internally to the block, heads, water pump and radiator, regardless of whether the parts are iron or aluminum. I have seen the damage that can be done on cars that the owners did not properly maintain. I can also personally attest to all, do not use Dex-cool in vehicles where it isn't specifically suggested to do so. I had a radiator damaged by using it in my street rod and had to flush everything including the engine block.

This is good advice. Your Owner's Manual will confirm it. Also, do not ever mix another coolant with Dex-Cool. It can cause a chemical reaction and quickly break down seals and gaskets. I've seen it first-hand on another GM vehicle. My mechanic even says not to use flush products in a Dex-Cool system.
