Re: Any still consider Supra challenger !!! (Oman_Supra)
This forum has taught me to have new found respect for Supras (about the only thing the Fast & the Foolish got right...) Most other mags never tested it got much faster than mid 13's, so race will come down to driver skill, and maybe outside temps, altitude (turbos lose less power than normally aspirated engines at altitude), etc.
Yet another "truck" engine nemesis... Yes, Supras will go mid to low 12's (11's with tires) for pocket change found in your couch, but to get the SERIOUS power the owners have to dump the twins and go with a single turbo and new fuel management system-I believe making them capable of close to 800 + reliable hp at the flywheel :U
Oh, and we're talkng $10K +++ for this stuff
I've read on this forum of guys igniting the tires from on boost punches at 60 mph
Re: Any still consider Supra challenger !!! (Oman_Supra)
Supras are nice machines with a very strong engine, however that rear wing is butt ugly and is a major turn-off for me. Makes it look like a shopping cart.
Even they have less hp and torque than a stock C5, their major advantage is in the gearing and the higher rev. limit.
Have a look at the Supra's 4th gear with a 1.31 ratio. The C5 in 4th gear is 1:1 but therefore has a 3.45 rear end which would make them almost equally fast.
Re: Any still consider Supra challenger !!! (rhoeven)
I see very few Supras at the road courses. We did have two the other weekend at Willow Springs with 500 and 600hp. One problem these cars have is weight. Even striped, they are about 3500lbs I think (that is what the guy with the 500hp car said). My Z06 has heads, cam and headers and about 460-470hp and 435 or so trq. and I was blowing by the 500hp Supra. He has racing seats, racing tranny, racing suspension and racing rubber. I was on street tires.
Before I get any Supra flamers, I owned a 95'TT with HKS Boost controller, etc. In my limited dealings with the car, I would say that they can be killer drag cars (8s), but have some disadvantages at the road courses.
Re: Any still consider Supra challenger !!! (Oman_Supra)
Oman,
Another thing I forgot to mention is the cost of this car back then. If you look at it in today's dollars, it's like spending at least $60,000 on a Corvette. For that price, a 2002 Z06 looks like a better deal, all things considered.
Re: Any still consider Supra challenger !!! (Dave68)
yah Z06 nice car, still Supra got toyota quality , relaibility , the good thing about the supra its rare, C5 so nice, but they are all over the place
Z06 is cool
Re: Any still consider Supra challenger !!! (Mag Red Monster)
While those #s are impressive, later the mag editors said that the 93 Supras they received for testing were "ringers". They based this on the fact that all other supras they tested were running 13.5-13.8 several years later....roughly the same as a 92-96 LT1 Corvette. They are still impressive cars when modified.
Re: Any still consider Supra challenger !!! (Oman_Supra)
Oman_Supra: Hmmm - If memory serves me well then I do remember that a stock C5 (or Z06) can and has reached speeds in excess of 200mph. In fact, there was one turbo'd unit that was recorded at 235mph.
That is much faster than a Supra - either way.
The original question was: Any still consider Supra challenger?
Answer: Stock - no way. Heavely modified - maybe/yes.
However, either way you cut it - its still a foreign make car that will NEVER have the same respect as most Super Cars.
Re: Any still consider Supra challenger !!! (Oman_Supra)
The Supra comes with a speed limiter. All you have to do to remove that is to take a a single fuse. If you think a Supra can't reach 200mph then you are sadly mistake. Check out the top speed record in Germany at Nurbring. The record holder was a Supra. Respect? I for one respect power and performance. Most true enthusiasts do. Doesnt matter what kind of machine it is. If you just respect a name then I guess you are the type that make the Porshe boxster so popular. Hey, it's a Porsche right. It's gotta be a performance machine.

You know, what is the purpose of this topic? Challenger in what regard? The more I read your responses, the more it just sounds like you just wanted to advertise for your car. The Supra is no longer sold in the US, so there is no need to advertise for the Supra anymore. Yes, we know that the Supra beats all other cars, it always has and will continue to for many generations to come. Yes, going in a straight line is all that matters and if you wanted to, you could put 800RWHP out of a stock block. I'm sure your car is fine and dandy, but I see little need to post this kind of material in the "C5 Tech/Performance" section unless it has something to do with C5s. There is a section called Other Cars. And there is a reason why C5's are "all over the place", and that is because it is a very well made car at a good price. What's the mystery?

Re: Any still consider Supra challenger !!! (daveydc5)
Yep Davey, that was my car. I am a contractor and work down in the RNOSC at DISA. THanks for the compliments. Make sure u stop by next time you come through.
Re: Any still consider Supra challenger !!! (2 TYTE)
2 TYTE: I have to admit that I do like your car. Nice style!
The point I was trying to make was that the Supra has not gathered the respect that many think it should have. When the general populace thinks of SuperCars they think Ferrari, Porche, Lambo, etc. They do not think Lexus, Toyota, or Mazda. From what I have gathered from talking to various people over the years a SuperCar is more like a Viper, Z06, Carrera TT, F40, etc. Whether they are or not - is just a matter of perspective (IMHO).
Any car is modifiable/customizable - such as the Orange "F&F" Supra recently posted. This is when I say "Hats-Off" as it shows a real dedication towards performance and/or style.
I agree that it is a shame that the Supra is not sold in the US anymore.
