I know you can google frieght shipping and find some stuff. There are also websites that you can basically put an add out for what you need shipped when, who, where, and how and you will get bids from companies that ship. You could also contact a dealer on this forum and they would probably have some insight on the process as well. I would think that shipping an engine (300lbs or so) that is palletized would be a max of around $250 and that would be shipping nearly coast to coast. Hope this helps but it is merely an estimate.
Contact FedEx, they will send a truck equipted with a hand truck to your door and yes it must be drained from all fluids and capped off and straped to a pallet.
And do your home work on their shipping rates, the way they tell you will not necessarily be the lowest rate.
Last time I looked they had about 50 different rates!

I shipped a rear-end out of my '96 from Pennsylvania to Washington State. It weighed approximately 100lbs, cost was around $110 - $120 I beleive, and FEDEX was the cheapest.
I will be in this SAME BOAT soon.. Im purchasing Englandgreens 2001 engine when he replaces it with an LS2. The problem is, he is moving to Florida and I live in CT. I wonder how much that will cost??
I thought EG was having the work done by ECS? If that is still the case then just have him leave the motor there so you can pick it up. That's certainly much easier than shipping it cross country.
