Default tech help on I.D.'ing a sensor

what is the sensor for on the air bridge on the pass. side just behind the mass air flow???? mine has had the wires cut right at the end. my 2000 cpe was purchased with a vortex cold air intake allready installed. i was putting on the red coupler i got from a forum member today and noticed the sensor wires had been hacked off. the sensor has a very small loop that sticks into the air bridge. about a 1\2 inch or maybe slightly longer, with what appears to be some sort of small oblong shaped transistor attaching the loop. is this the nitrous trigger switch i have been dreaming about? or just some sort of none important part someone cut off of the original air box?? hey and if you think it also should be the nos. stuff i so desire, could you send me the rest of it????? thanks for your help identifying this

I agree with the others. It's the IAT sensor and that little "resistor" is actually a thermistor. It's a temperature sensitive resistor that changes it's resistance with temperature. HTH

yup, you guys are 100% right on what this thing is. found it in gmparts direct. and at the web site that sells the clear breathless performance cold air intake i have. now the question is....... they show that 2001 and up have this mat sensor or iat sensor in the M.A.F. unit. i compared a 2001 at work to mine and the M.A.F. is way different. knowing that the 2001 is stk.... and not knowing if mine is... i took mine apart and could find nowhere a G.M. symbol. i mean nowhere. could i have an aftermarket one with the 2001 built in temp sensor??? i have no codes showing, the car runs great!!! and i work at a chev store and the computer was checked for codes a month ago. i would be asking a tech in the shop but.... they charge me just the same as they charge you all i do have some very good ones there but.. there always is this battle between sales and service you see. sure am glad i have you guys to turn too

The earlier maf's were a 3 wire connector and the iat was mounted separately in the airbridge, whereas the later style maf was a 5 wire connector with an integrated iat. A simple visual will tell you what maf is installed on your car.

Here is a picture of my 2002 MAF connector. An early connector is way different.

bill, i will tonight when i get home take some pics. i just went out to the car. and it has 3 wires going into the maf. they are yellow, black w/ white stripe, and brown. there is another sensor on the driver side up by the coupler. it has 2 wires. purple and brown. maybe that is the temp sensor. but the pass. side down by the maf has one in the round flat factory plug spot built into the iarbridge also. i saw on the breathless parformance web site that they have upgrade temp sensors for $25. and it says to add a couple of them. ??????? i've got to put some pic's on here. your maf has the plug on the side at an angle. mine is on top. yours has the barcode on the driver side mine is on the pass side. the 2001 i looked at is shaped like yours. why would someone move the temp sensor???

O.K. If you have a 2 wire iat mounted and connected on the driver side right before the tb, you're ok. The other sensor on the pass side is probably just plugging a hole that someone probably drilled out for a nos spraybar at an earlier time then removed it.

I would have to say it is being used as a PLUG. If the engine is running fine, I wouldnt worry about it.

Actually, the location of where the IAT sensor is now, is the original factory location. The other location on the pax side is what looks to me like where the previous owner had installed one of the IAT sensor re-location kits, sold by several vendors. He may have had some sort of issue in the past and decided to go back to the stock set-up.
I agree with Bill, if it's running fine, don't worry.

Looks like someone repaired / plugged it that would be my guess as long as it's not leaking any air there it will probably be ok.

The first picture is the MAF plug.

The second is a plug (factory location of the old IAT)

The Third is the new location of the IAT, The aftermarket intake looks like it required it to be moved.
