Ok, I'm trying very very hard to stay calm. But truth is that I just got my 2002 corvette coupe, MN6 on Monday January 16th. But already freakin out because on Thursday I made a complete stop at a red light. Turned my blinker on. Then, suddenly the blinker began flashing rapidly. About a minute later it went back to normal blinking speed. Then drover and turned it on again to go left into my back alley to get into my garage. It blinked at normal speed again. Once in my garage, I put it in neutral, parking brake on, and turned ignition off. Then as the seat pulled back and the steering colmn retracked back as well it made a LOUD BUZZZING NOISE. Everytime I drive it will make this noise. Sometimes when I turn on the car and sometimes when turning off the car. Now I did run a self diagnostics to check the codes, and only one came up "60 IPC U1160 H".

Can anyone tell me if that code is due to my steeing column noise. I'd like to know something before taking it to the dealership. Thanks!

If one of your blinkers was going faster than the other, check your day time running lights.... when mine went on the front passenger side, the blinker went crazy fast.

After popping the daytime light twice in a week, I pulled the driver side to make it more stealth...lol.

What kind of noise was it? How loud and was it coming from the interior. I know the pop-up headlight motor makes a really loud buzzing sound when they start to go.

I'm sure someone on here can help ya out.....

The loud buzzing noise is probably just a relay about to go bad. They are located in the fuse panel under the dash in front of the passenger seat.

Well... for one, replace the lights up front...just go grab a couple of new bulbs from autozone or something. As far as the noise in the cabin goes...before you turn off the car, undo the passenger footwell, then while ur turning the car off, have your ears down so you can see if you can determine the source of the sound better. But, if I were u...I would first disable the automatic entry/exit feature so the seat/steering wheel, doesnt retract. See if the noise still happens. If it doenst, you've narrowed your search. If you need help, I'm close by.

The code has nothing to do with the noise. It is just signifies a communication error between modules. In most cases the code means nothing since the car's modules continuously poll each other and every now and then one of the modules does not get an answer to its poll and the code is set.

If the buzzing is only a second or so in duration, it's the steering column lock mechanism. It has a small motor and worm drive unit that drives the locking pawl, engaging it into the lock plate.

Hope this helps....

As I was out last night, I've determined that the loud buzzing noise is due to my drivers side head light. Last night I manually left the lights on and turned the car off. Headlights were up and car didnt' make any noises. As soon as I turned the headlights off, buuuzzzzzzzzzzz. Again the noise was made. What I can't understand is wy during the day it makes the noise when the headlights don't even come up... Anyone know...

Your DIC code is an Instrument Cluster code:

"U1160 Loss of Communications with LDCM"

The H means its historical so the fault was transitory.

From your description it sounds like you have two fairly common problems.

Fast blinkers probably mean a dead DRL bulb. Check your DRLs with the car running and the handbrake off. If you have a light out, post again and we can tell you how to fix it. You'll need a 4157NALL bulb (although 3157NA works).

Although I can't be sure, the buzzing from the headlight sounds like your motor gear is stripped. If it is, it's a very loud buzzing, almost grinding, noise as the flip ups close flush. It runs on for 5-10 seconds.

There's a plastic gear in the motor assembly which often fails. You can change it yourself by getting a brass gear from Rodney Dickman.

This is the site you need for the brass gears:

http://www.rodneydickman.com/retail_new.html

Go to the Electrical section and you'll see the Corvette C5 Brass Gear kit.

If you take it to the dealer it will be about $450 It's reasonably complex process but there are good write ups here and some guys have been successful. I had a drivers headlamp module changed under warranty but I have a brass gear ready if it fails again.

Hope that helps.

Agree with all of that although it is weird you say the noise happens even if the headlight is down? Sure? In that case who knows...acutator? relay? If its really loud and annoying its the gear for sure. Get one from Rodney Dickman and put it in. If your not mechanically inclined, PM me and I'lll put it in for you.

Everytime you remove the key from the ignition, you should hear a buzzing of the actuator motor locking the column.

Try testing for the buzz in two steps. First turn the ignition key to the off position but do not remove the key, and listen for the buzz. Then remove the key from the ignition and see if it buzzes. You should not hear the column lock actuator buzz until you remove the key, and it should be coming from the area of the steering column.

If you hearing a buzz that is coming from the engine compartment, that is something else.

I had only had my c5 for a week and it started doing what you described. I wondered what the hell is that untill I stood outside the car and realized it was the headlight gear. I am a woman and not real mechanically inclined an changed mine out in about an hour and a half for $39 got the kit and everything I needed including instructions to do it from topdownsolutions.com. Got the equipment in 2 days! They ship quick and the owner answers the phone directly in case you need help. Great company! Hope this helps!!!

Yes, looks like I've finally found the problem by doing a couple of the simple tests everyone has recommended me to perform to determine the problem. It is the gear grinding in the headlight motor. I will be ordering the brass gear tonight and kindly one of our members has offered to help me install it.

Thank you to everyone in here for being so helpful in helping me resolve this issue! Makes me even more proud to be a part of this forum.
