Yup I know the screw drive had to go though both sides.

Oh that oil look realy bad. I mean like heavy black crude oil, it looked and felt that bad.

Some of you know that I change my oil evey 500 miles. Now dont freak out. that is two weekends on the track, 3000 to red line 6 times every 2:15 for 30 mins at a time 3-4 times a day, two days in a row.

after two weekends the oil DIC says 30% or less and the oil analysis says YUP time fore a change.

I confess! I used the "stab it with screwdriver method" once too
That was a long time ago... in a land far, far away...

Screwdriver and a hammer always worked for me. Drive it through then turn it.

Another trick that works most times.. if you have an old leather belt (the kind that holds up your pants), loop it around the filter so that when you pull counter clockwise (to loosen), the belt tightens against the buckle. The more you pull, the tighter the belt gets and should loosen the filter.

Cheers

was waiting to see this mentioned. BUT don't use the "nut" to tighten it super tight...the nut is used to untighten it. WORKS GREAT!!

The oil filter is indented or recessed that you can't get nothing more than the oil filter "cup" on it. Best to use the K&N HP1007 oil filter. EZ on EZ off.

The oil filter torque spec is 22 ft-lbs.

The oil pan drain plug torque spec is 18 ft-lbs.

I used the K&N oil filter once. I found the oil pressure was 4-7 psi higher all the time. SO no more.

I will stick with the AC Delco PF46 - I get 6 at a time which last me 8 weekends as I wind up giving one or two away at the track. and two for the truck and the wifes vette.

yep..this is what i had to do w/mine and many other cars before this. it's safe. as long as you brace the other side of the filter and dont' break the engine block w/the screwdriver :P. in other words- put the screwdriver thru the filter down low and not towards the top of the filter near the engine.

But watch out for the oil leaking all over with this method. Once you have loosened the filter a little bit, you can use one of the cup wrenches or your hands to get it all the way off. I had to do this on mine after a dealer oil change.

Once the filter is loose I put a plastic bag over the filter and then take it off. the filter and the oil fall into the bag. Not too messy then.

Guys, I've been using this special oil filter wrench for a few months now with my new business. It adjusts for ANY size oil or hydraulic filter and works in LOTS of places that the band or cup styles don't work.

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/produ...&bidsite=CRAFT

Craftsman Universal Oil Filter Wrench, Auto-Adjustable
Sears item #02820523000 Mfr. model #51121SA706
Patented adjustable wrench services filters from 2.5 to 4.75 in. (62mm to 121mm). Use a 3/8 in. square driver ratchet or 3/4 in. wrench to turn. Wrench automatically tightens when torque is applied. Black oxide finish resists corrosion.

It really kicks butt. I highly suggest it for ANYONE who does their own vehicle maintenance. Sure beats the screwdriver poking thru your oil pan if you hit too hard (in a regular SBC V8).

That's really trick, iffn I got one of them I might just start doing oil changes myself again....

Sure beats the vampire method (drive a stake (or screwdriver) thru the heart and twist) that I always used on any difficult filter in the past...

I've been using those for quite some time. Since I've got a lift at my place, I get stuck doing a LOT of oil changes for family and friends... Those cheap strap wrenches get in between the oil pan on the C5 with ZERO issue and won't collapse the stupid filter case.

Best $13 you'll spend, especially since you can use them on other "stuff" as well!

I had to deal with the same thing on my DD because the previous owner had a "15 min" job done before i bought the car. Used the same procedure to remove the filter too.

Lisle tools makes a nice oil filter tool they have a large and small size one, uses a 3/8 drive, and it like a cup but it squeezes the filter and you turn it to loosen it. It's pretty neat, I've crushed alot of filters that were over tighten but it seems to do the trick 99% of the time the other 1% is on some cars with the cartridge style filters and plastic housings I do not reccomend using it as obviously you can crack the plastic housing.. but it's not an expensive tool and it work's great for REMOVING filters.

just my .02 glad the screw driver method worked out, I've done that before as well.. something I'll always remmber from fellow vette tech.. desprite times, call for desprite measures..
