Default Cutting Off the oil filter??

Ok guys

Working with a friend on his vette ( no not the AU N EGL ) and we cant get his oil filter off with the cup type filter changer. It on too dang tight and the cup just turns on the filter.

Cant seam to get the claw type oil filter change on, or a BF Channel Lock wretch.

any other thoughts, what else to try ????

I was thinking of taking the dremmel tool and cutting it off.

Never done it on a Corvette but I had to tear the filter off a 327 to get to the nut and then turn the nut with a cold chisel and hammer until I got it moving. I had taken to a tech school nearby for the last oil change. I change my own now, thanks.

You can try stabbing it with a screwdriver and turning.

And if it doesn't work, it's still a good beginning for the next step!

You can sometimes get them off with the cup type filter by wrapping a piece of sand paper around the filter and then putting the cup on.

Have had to do this a few times on other peoples cars... I cannot understand why everyone puts the filter on Gorilla tight.

Sand paper worked.

Once I go it off I beat the chit out of it with a BFH. No not really but did cut it open an unfolded the filter paper.

Going to send his oil to the two oil testing companies I use.

My guess is they way he drove his car that 4500 miles between oil changes and the DIC oil indicator at 5% was NOT a good idea.

Thanks Guys

Nah, Mongo just put the last one on. It still amazes me how much a filter will tighten up.

Have a good one,
Mike

put a K&N oil filter on ... it has a 1" nut welded to the base. You will never have this problem again.

Thanks Guys

it'll be fine...the computer takes into account a lot more than just time/mileage when it calculates oil life...I would bet he's no where near wearing out that oil

Be careful with this technique. I REALLY screwed up a few years ago. ack: I tore the aluminum off the base of the filter leaving me with a bigger problem. I had to use a small chisel and hammer to un-thread the base.

Sears has these neat little rubber strap wrenches that work wonderfully in these situations... I have them and recommend them highly!

Nobody really mentioned this particularly but the screwdriver has to go inside one side and out the other or else it usually rips the filter when it's on too tight. Obviously you have to be careful doing this - especially getting it to come out the other side without hitting anything else.
