Default Stupid Question

Team,

Since I have purchased a 3:42 rear end with a aftermarket TC, I know I will have to but a B&M transmission cooler, but didn't the C5's particulary my 98 (A4) already come with a transmisson cooler.

If, so what is the big difference between stock and B&M. Do I need to take the stock one off to insert the B&M.

Another question is where can I find a really high end transmission cooler, the B&M is $55.00 - $65.00. It just seems kind of low to be such an important piece to the car?

Yes you have a factory cooler. That doesn't change. The new cooler mounts in front of the rad./a/c cond.. The new unit is spliced into the trans. coolant line near where it enters the radiator.
Expect a little higher water temp. after the aux. trans cooler install as the new unit sits in front of the rad.
If your not working your car excessively hard racing, the B+M aux. unit will work just fine.

So is it really worth it, and how much higher does the water temp rise!

Thanks bcseitz!

Depending on weather/driving conditions 2 to 8+. I have a 160 stat in my car and my fans are programed to come on at approx. 192 and 198. What I noticed right away was my fans were on more than usual.
However I also got rid of my ProTorque 2800, couldn't stop the Vibrations, I had the stock unit put back in. I really didn't like the high stall anyway, too loose for me. I did keep the B+M cooler.

The factory trans cooler doesn't just cool the trans, it also helps warm it up as engine coolant usually warms up before the trans. So it works both ways to help regulate the trans temp ect..

There are other options for trans coolers out there too, my favorite brand is hayden, they have an excellent design. some of the real cheap coolers like the tube and fin design do not give as much surface area for heat transfer such as a stacked plate design cooler.

Just my .02..
