hey everyone.. my rack and pinion steering had a little run in with my crank pulley thanks to a crank bolt backing out.. i need to replace the steering rack now..
car is a 2002 Z06.. so what im wondering is... will ANY C5 steering rack work alright?? are they all the same??? if not what are the differences?? im just not looking forward to paying $1,000 for the part through the dealership.. and ihave one lined up from a 1998 C5 that i think would work just fine..
A Z06 steering rack has a little less internal lock-to-lock travel than a standard C5 rack, presumably because of the wider Z06 wheels. Otherwise they are all the same.
well.. to clarify... ALL 98-04 corvettes have the exact same part number for the steering rack... they all use the same one no differences
That explains why our '97 rack has a different PN from our '02 and '04 Z06 racks. When we inquired about it we were told the Z06 racks had slightly less travel.
Maybe the newer PN superseded the old PN as a replacement part when the Z06 came out? or was it really released in 1998? Just curious.

you know i didnt really think about that... maybe your the Z06 steering rack replaced all the regulard C5's and is now the everyday replacement part... just like the LS2 timing chain is now supplied for all LSX series motors...
I called 2 dealers and they both said that there is only one rack available. It's the C5 rack that they are selling. You can not get the Z06 rack anymore. I have to add stops to the new rack. If I don't my CCW track wheels would hit the A-arm at lock.
