Ok, first some background on the car.....1998 A4 with 31k on the odometer. At a friend's house this morning, I am standing next to the Vette and I hear a slight "eek-eek" screeching coming from the engine bay. I pop the hood and it sounds like a pulley or mild belt squeel. As I'm moving around the engine compartment a slight movement catches my eye. I look down and see that the crank pulley is moving. Not my imagination, but a definite wobble!!
Car seems to run fine and I'm not sure when this began. What's my next step?! Is this about to fly off the front of my engine at any moment? Should I shut her down and have it towed to the repair shop? If the crank pulley has to be replaced, should I just buy an aftermarket underdrive pulley? Any suggestions on brand? Any help is GREATLY appreciated.....
Well thats definetly not cool. The good news is the pulley shouldnt fly of off your engine because the steering rack sits about 1.5" in front of the pulley/balancer.
The really bad news is to change the balancer it is a few steps short of a cam change. If it were me buy a new balancer or under drive unit, cam and springs. Because you have to drop the rack and any way to change the pulley.
