I've had my column lock often, and I just reset the DIC a few times
and the problem would go away. Today it locked, I reset the DIC
and got on the on ramp for I-95. About the time I merged the lock
engaged just a little...I could feel the cog catching but not fully
engaging, so I turned to the right....to head for the emergency lane,
just in case...and wham, it hard locked. Motor quit instantly, and I
headed down into the grass, as I had turned a little too sharp
to the right. Talk about scary. I was told that this would NEVER happen
once you were moving!!!!!!!
I called my dealer and requested a time to bring it in to have the lock
completely removed and was told they would not do that!
Has anyone removed the lock themselves, or has info on what parts
to remove to do so? I have endless tools, so I am prepared for the
worse....drilling, cutting, whatever, I want this out.
PS After I sat there for awhile, I cleared the DIC, started the car and it
was unlocked like no big deal. The dealer wanted me to drive it 60 miles
to have it serviced. I was 2 mi for my house and that's it unitl the lock is
completely removed.
Re: 1st time steering locked while on I-95 (200plus)
You would be doing everyone a favor if you reported your story to the NHTSB or DOT (I forgot which agency handles this). There should be an immediate recall , if there isn't one already.
Re: 1st time steering locked while on I-95 (Ha-Ha)
yeah thats kissing bs man!
im glad you can laugh about that , but there is a serious need for a recall.. make a fuss about it man , you really could have been killed due to this dumbass column lock.
seriously you need to report this to like someone important..
To date, I don't think they found any credible evidence of a column lock problem while moving. And this might help move GM to expand the recall to all C5s.

Look in the mall. It's about $65.
There is a national recall on nearly all the cars with the CL- mine goes in tomorrow for it. Call the dealer and they'll put the fix in. However, I've heard rumors around here that the fix doesn't fix anything- it still locks. My advice- head to the dealer and get the recall done (for your records in case you need to sell the car), then install the CL bypass. I'm putting the bypass in as soon as I get it back from the dealer.
Re: 1st time steering locked while on I-95 (Umrswimr)
GM has a recall on some vin numbers now...it will probably be expanded to all when the parts become avaible. Right now, there are big part shortages for the ones under the recalled vin. I've been waiting 3 weeks for mine, and i'm first on the list at my dealer. The recall part for the autos is a column lock bypass, similar to one C5 Solutions sells...GM just stole the idea. The Part for the MN6 is a "improved" relay....GM cannot legally install a column bypass in the MN6, but can in the A4 because the shifter can lock. My dealer gave me the choise of which one I wanted.
Re: 1st time steering locked while on I-95 (Umrswimr)
Because of GM's crappy history with this problem, I've installed the CL bypass and am leaving it at that. No recall fix for me. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. the CL Bypass is the way to go. It takes 10 minutes at most and you will never have a problem. So what if it makes the car a little easier to steal, that's what insurance is for.
Re: 1st time steering locked while on I-95 (mcc99)
I installed the bypass a long time ago. I never had a problem with the CL, but knowing what a piece of crap it is, its best to have it unplugged. I would get GM to replace the CL and then bypass it. Or rip it out yourself and put the bypass in to handle the error code.
I can't believe GM still putting this crap foot CL in these cars after 5 years of trouble.. morons

It is possible that the bypass WILL NOT WORK if you have had the GM recall fix done. Tom (the inventor of the bypass) is trying to figure this out, but at least one fellow who had the recall fix performed could not get the bypass to work thereafter.
Several people who have had the recall work done have then had the CL problem occur. I think that taking out a bypass from your car at this point and having the GM recall work done is imprudent (I'm being a gentleman in my choice of language).
had the recall done the other day on my 2000 m6 (the service center broke and replaced my radiator in the process too, go figure). got it home and was letting it sit until my CLB arrived. go the clb a few days later, cranked the car up to back it out of the garage to get some room around it. while backing up, in motion, SMACK! column lock. wow, what an awesome recall service, lasted all of one crank.
Being that you have a 2000 FRC M6,what happened to you is excatly what GM claims can not happen, resulting in a recall that does not prevent column lock failure at speed. The recall on the M6 does not prevent column lock failure,it only shuts the fuel off should column lock failure occur at speed, which in turn is simply an attempt to cover GM's butt.
When column lock failure occurs,99.99999% of the time the lock pin simply does not retract when starting the vehicle leaving the vehicle inoperable. There is a very small remote chance (.000001%) that the column lock pin will retract only slightly when starting, leaving the pin to "ratchet" along the engagment holes on the lock plate, also allowing the vehicle to be driven at speed because a message has been given to the BCM that the lock is in the "unlocked" state. This causes the potential for lock pin to snag one of the engagment holes while at speed, which is what happend to you
I would get the bypass...
