Corvettes of Houston is where I ordered mine. I wanted to remove the lock plate, but when I looked at the shop manual, you have to remove a lot of stuff to get down to it - shims, bearing, etc, I didn't think it was worth the trouble. Also, if you remove the lock plate, something will have to go back in to retain the parts stack height. GM does remove the lock plate on the A4 recall, so the best way to solve this would be to get a dealer to do an A4 recall on an M6 car. This would require a real friendly dealer, and I don't know how to find one. Good Luck.

I can't believe GM hasn't stepped up in support of their supposed "Flagship Sports Car".

Somebody is going to die because of this, eventually the odds will dictate it, do the math. Hopefully this info is recorded in the "black box" when it happens, who knows that thing may prove to be useful yet, hah. I can think of plenty of locations where if that had happened, you're a goner...

That being said, I'm damn glad you're OK!

The only thing that has given me piece of mind with this type of problem is just to take care of it outside the warranty/recall arena. It's sad but GM and especially the Dealerships are not to be trusted in this. I started to document all the fights I've had with them, but no reason to turn this into my own vent session.

I would seriously consider informing your local law enforcement of their instructions for you to drive the car in. I believe that fits well within the framework of "Reckless Endagerment", or conspiracy thereto.

I encourage everyone to make sure this is taken care of by a professional that is not a GM or GM dealership employee. Something like this is not worth saving a couple of benjamin's over!

GM insists that this problem will never ever happen while the car is moving!!!! You need to report this to an many people as possible DOT, NTSB, Local News ect ect. You and many more people could have been KILLED!!!

Spread the word!!!!

God Bless you and I am GLAD that you are alright!!!

I don't believe the story. even if it is 3 years old. What kind of a moron has the steering wheel lock up, clears it and keeps on driving. In my opinion, it would be his fault if it happened again and he wrecked. This story is

The Part for the MN6 is a "improved" relay....GM cannot legally install a column bypass in the MN6, but can in the A4 because the shifter can lock. My dealer gave me the choise of which one I wanted.
I had mine done at the dealer for the 6spd and they told me all they did was re-flash the PCM. Nothing about an "improved relay". Now I am not sure what they really did to my car.

This situation s/b reported to the NTSB and for what it's worth--GM. This is the exact condition GM maintains happens ONLY when the car starts up and goes only a few miles per hour . Now--get the CLB and forget this problem once and for all.....Good luck.

This story sounded fishy 3 years ago and still does. I just checked the history of the original poster. He hasnt had a post since 8-28-2001. If I recall correctly there was another similiar story on another forum which proved to be .

regardless of whether this particular incident happened or not, it is definitely possible and ridiculous that 3 years later, it remains a likely reality. I think i already posted this, but i had my 2000 m6 serviced under recall, and had it lock up again a day or so later. with the column locked i can drive up and down my driveway. that was ridiculous enough PRE recall but maddening to be POST.

correct me if im wrong, im still new to the details of this system, but i thought with the recall, the car isnt supposed to be driveable when locked up. so either the morons at my local service center didn't do something right or the recall is bogus.

additionally, i thought that with the column lock completely removed, the car was not supposed to be driveable, testing this i found it to be untrue on my car. i unplugged the column lock's wire harness after using the gorilla-yank technique to FINALLY free it again, and was able to drive the car with no problems, just the annoyance of the error message on screen now and then.

fabrication or not, this whole column lock nonsense is dangerous. Ive put my CLB in now, no hesitation, but you have to remember that there is a vast majority of corvette owners out there who dont participate in these communities, online or off, and who will likely never know a CLB exists. GM doesnt operate their recall based on the presumption that users have this bypass either. This is a very dangerous negligence that is going to sadly end up seriously injuring someone at some point.

Do you have an A4 or MN6? If you have the A4, have the recall done to remove your steering lock. If you have a MN6 get the Column Lock Bypass kit sold by some of the forum vendors. It does exactly what it says...bypasses the steering lock. That message you are getting could be a warning sign your steering lock is failing or maybe your theft deterent system is acting up. You can perform a search and read the thousands of posts regarding this issue of the column lock.
