Default Electrical Issues

Hello everyone, I'm new here. I bought my Vette from a member of this forum, BlackMagiC5. He is a great guy and I got a great deal. Its a 2000 Vette, M6, Z51, black/black, Corsa Exhaust, Varam intake. Anyway it has a few electrical issues I was hoping I could get some assistance here.

Firstly the turn signals like to cease functioning every once in a while, if i smack the hazard button around a few times they start up again, I bought a new switch for that, havent put it in yet, how hard is it to get in there?

Secondly the reverse lights have ceased to function also. Bought a new switch to that, I am also going to install a Hurst, is that switch accessable near the shifter or do I have to get under the car, is it hard?

Finally... not electrical, but the ebrake doesnt work either, are the cables adjustable? How hard are they to get to? I havent gotten under the car yet.

Overall I love this car, it blows away all my Trans Ams etc that Ive owned. Thanks for your help!

EDIT; Almost forgot my passenger window is a few mm too low so I get a lot of wind noise... is the window adjustable if i pull the door apart?

Ebrake wise, I'll be fixing this myself soon, but as I understand it, the grease on the ratchet mechanism dries up and then it won't ratchet or engage - you have to remove the center counsel/armrest to get to the ebrake mechanism -

do a search, and you should be able to find instructions on the forum for removal of the center counsel and ebrake adjustment - PM me if you have other questions.

You can remove the radio and HVAC panel and access the switch. There is a way to relaese the bottom plastic catch and then use a wood dowl and hammer and smack the switch and the top catch will pop out. If you do it as per the manual,,your going to need to remove the top of the dash! The new switch should just pop in.

Secondly the reverse lights have ceased to function also. Bought a new switch to that, I am also going to install a Hurst, is that switch accessable near the shifter or do I have to get under the car, is it hard?

The reverse switch is on the passengers side of the transmission at the rear of the car. You will need to jack up the car to get to it. Its a 20 min repair.

Finally... not electrical, but the ebrake doesnt work either, are the cables adjustable? How hard are they to get to? I havent gotten under the car yet.

Yep,, your problem with the E brake lies in the E brake mechansim. You need to clean and lubricate the ratchet with new grease.

Yep,,your window is adjustable in a number of directions. Up down and inward and outward. You will need to remove the door panel and find the adjustment screws. The ones for the inward and outward are on the bottom of the door and behind the big red reflector on the door panel.

Thanx, window is good, turn signals work, however I was wrong about the reverse lights. I get no juice to the reverse switch, however there is no fuse that I can find anywhere for the reverse lights. There is a relay, how do I pull those relays out? Or is there something else that could be causing this??

I cleaned the ebrake it works, barely, basically it sucks pretty bad.

Do yourself a favor and order a set of shop manuals... If you plan to continue to work on your own car, they are invaluable...

Use your fob and lock and unlock the car while you watch the reverse lights. If they work with the FOB (which is a separate and independent circuit) that will help us tell you where to look.

Unfortunately my factory key fob is dead, however I have an aftermarket Clifford alarm system installed in there that does not flash the reverse lights when i arm/disarm. I dont know if that helps.

Why is the factory FOB dead? Have you ever tried to do a FOB Relearm procedure??

If your current FOB doesnt make the BCM flach the reverse lights, I dont know what to tell you.

I dunno, battery could be dead, just got the car 2 weeks ago and it already had the alarm in it so I didnt bother with the fob. I'll try and put a battery in it and go from there I guess....

You should have had 2 fobs with the car. You can program up to three to work on the same car. The FOB Programming instructions are in the owners manual. I think you can also access them in the Forum Tech Tips section.

There are TWO FOB procedures. Programming and RE-Sync. You must first programm each FOB. After the FOBs are programmed, if for some reason, they stop working, all you need to do is press and hold the LOCK and UN-LOCK buttons at the same time and wait until the horn toots. (usually takes about 10-15 seconds for the FOB to resync)

Hope this helps.

Im sure the one i have probably works the battery is just dead, the car only had one. The prior owners put an aftermarkety alarm in that has its own fobs, a few years ago. I have no reason to use the factory one.

However what controls the reverse lights besides the BCM. The BCM cant be bad or I would have otehr problems with the car. I have none. The relay in the fuse box is the onlyn thing I can trace back. How does one pull that thing out? What else controls the reverse lights prior to the switch?

Here is the rest of the story! The fuse that your looking for is in the Instrument panel electrical center (passengers foot well)

It is fuse# 21 (BTSI/BU) 10 amp.

To remove the relay, pull straight up while rocking the relay side to side and back and forth. It will come out but it will take some wiggling!
