Default E brake cable removal ??????????

E brake cable removal ??????????

Trying to remove E brake cable. I have the handle out and the rear shoes. I see in the service manual it goes to a equalizing bracket. Where is it located so I can remove it? Car is on trailer with no tires so I can't jack it very high. I can only lift it from the back and the splitter limits that lift height. I can follow the cables as long as my arm goes from the rear but can't see above the diff and tranny. Can I get it with out major component removal or is it up in the tunnel above the exhaust? Thanks!

John -

IF I remember correctly, the cable is up in the tunnel above the exhaust - I looked at mine about 6 months ago from the underside, and I recall thinking it would be a bioetch to change - I just finished doing a sound insulation install, so I've looked at the interior where it connects to the handle as recently as last week - It appears to run down the passenger side of the tunnel, probably about 3 inches down from the top of the tunnel.

I had mine up on jackstands when I used my creeper to crawl under the car - I had someone activate the handle and I observed the cable moving the equalizing bracket -

According to the 2001 shop manual, page 5-103, you need to put the car on jackstands and remove the RH muffler to change the cable - it also mentions that there is a bracket that attaches the cable to the tunnel, but the shop manual didn't say that you had to remove the tunnel shield.

hope this helps

also, if you need the cable that runs from the park brake handle to the equalizing bracket, I've got a good one I'd get rid of cheap since I only needed the handle for my project.

on re-reading your post, maybe I jumped the gun - which cable are you trying to remove? the FRONT cable that runs from the equalizing bracket to the park brake handle, or the REAR cable that goes from the equalizing bracket to the brake shoes - the info I gave above was for replacing the FRONT cable.

Thanks I was trying to remove the whole cable system. I put 4 piston Wilwoods on the rear and 13" front rotors. Now there is no Ebrake drums. Guess I will have to drop the exhaust to get at it. Thanks! I can get it higher if I jack the whole car up on stands which I can't do right now. I may just tie up the cables till after the track event at worst case scenario.
