Is this possible? Can I add simple straigt pipes on my vette? On my T/A I removed the muffler and ran just pipes...best sound I've ever heard from an LT1. Is this even possible with the duel mufflers? If it can be done I will record the sound and post it for everyone. Will have it done tomorrow if I can.
The resonace will drive you nuts in short order. I tried it, and every piece of plastic in the interior buzzed like crazy. Very loud, but not worth it IMHO.
The car will be wicked loud and you'll lose all sorts of low end torque....the vibration from the resonance will drive you nuts like Craig says.
If you want power and noise, run off-road pipes to some sort of aftermarket catback like borla stingers.....or possibly the SLP loudmouths (no muffler, straightpipes basically). Keep in mind that the SLP's had a horrible resonance in my friends C5 from about 60mph+...you couldn't even hear the passenger talk! There is a reason the borlas and corsa's are so expensive, they get rid of the resonance!
You can get Borla straight pipes that bolt right up for around $300.
Like the others said, extreme resonance. I paid $550 for dual tip b&b bullets and love the sound. Quiets the car down just enough from straight pipes to make it bearable.
well, poor boy ways i guess, but i just didnt see any need in wasting mod money for Borla or SLP straight pipes. SO, simple solution, take your car to a reputable custom muffler shop and have the pipe cut just before it bends to go into the muffler, then weld straights right out the back with the tips of your choice. He may also need to fabricate a hanger of some sorts to keep things in place and aligned all nice and pretty. Mine is fitted with 3" pipe after the cut and a dual tip on each side. Sounds like.....hmmm, straght pipe. If you have cats, that will mellow out the tone a bit, but without them it will be much louder. I like my pipes and it wont cost you an arm&leg. My friend had SLP LMs and my setup was actually much more pleasent on the highway! I really dont understand why, since they are both esentially straight pipes, but the SLP LMs where almost unbearable even compared to my ghetto straights? Sound clips can be found on my sig/link under the vette mods page.

I agree. Did not get much additional power although I did not lose any. The noise is the worst. Things in the cockpit vibrated that never vibated before. At 65 - 70 mph in 6th the drone was almost unbearable. A good set of Z06 Tis will work nicely, save some weight and will only be loud when you are on the throttle (mine took several HPDEs to get loud but they are now loud at full throttle).
Had the SLP LMs before doing any mods. Car was loud to say the least. After the LTs and x=pipe and no cats, It was totally obnoxious. Switched to Borla Stingers. Personnaly loved the sound with this combo, but still extremely loud, especially while cruising at 55-70mph. Took Have since switched to TPIS cat back, not exactly thrilled with the look out the back end, but I can change this with tips. Now have deep throaty sound at idle and low speed cruise. At WOT it screams!! picked up 10rwtq with this setup over the stingers, no change in rwhp. Looking at doing a mod comparable to what Andy did with the Z06 Ti's and routing a straight through pipe before the 90 degree bend to the muffler that exits out the tips with an electric cutout in between.
I have both the SLP's and Borla stingers for sale if interested as well as a G5x2 and a set of 918 springs and retainers. Just have never got around to posting them for sale.
Actully I picked up a few ponies and foot lbs with changing to straight pipes do to almost non existant back pressure.
I have TPIS long tubes, Random Tech Hi flow cats, 3" x-pipe and 3" straight pipe. Forget music or talking to the passanger at even 1/3 WOT.
at WOT it is a bit loud, even with ear plugs under the helmet.
.. i found the opposite .. but then again .. i know im running rich.
when i put the stock exhaust back on (for a week) and kept the offroad x and headers .. i was able to engage the TCS in 3rd gear for a chirp everytime .. now with the striaght pipes back, to my knowledge it doesnt engage but then again maybe it does .. i cant hear it chirp anymore.

it's only unbearable with a 4 speed coupe .. with the 6 & a 'vert .. it's nothing but smooth sailing.

my car us tuned to run extreemly lean, more oxygen for detonation and plenty of low end torque.

You dyno'ed before and after?
My point was more with the stock manifolds rather than headers....when you go long tubes, a complete higher flowing exhaust is more beneficial than on a stock car which is restricted by manifolds already.
The Corsa Indy's must be a truly fantastic design. I'm running Kooks LT's into an offroad pipe with 3.90's on an A4 heads/cam and there is virtually no resonance inside. Noise yes, vibration & resonance no. Even at cruise it isn't too loud. It's when I drop the hammer that all hell breaks loose.

I did not, but the guy who made them did. and he sent me his dynos.
+6 HP with straight pipes, +3 when the baffles were put in. ( baffles are for sound limitation tracks) If it puts out 100dbs @50 feet I would be supprised. any tracks that I have been at were 105 dbs are 50 feet.
I could feel the diffenece at WOT coming out of a corner.
Dont think straight pipes would make much scents on stock headers and x pipe.
