I think the stock c5 shifter cut down is better than the C6Z06 shifter, if you havent tried it yiou should before you go and by the C6 shifter. I have a stock C5 that I cut down and out a C6 **** on it and it felt as good as the c6 shifter but with shorter throws. I like the Hurst better than both though, I took the lightest springs and streched them a bit then cut them down to loosen the shifter up. It's notchy but no worse than the other aftermarket ones.
I put the Hurst shifter in with the Hurst ball ****. I have had an '01 since new and wish I did the change on day one. I have no problems finding any gears including reverse. In fact, it's easier to find gears than the stocker POS. I put in the soft springs and may put stronger springs in at a later date. Each gear is precise, and it is a pleasure that the car now shifts like it should have from the factory.
As far as being able to pull up the stick from the base . . . I'm not sure why anyone would have even wanted to, but I just checked mine and it doesn't move up at all.
Not that you would want to, but when you power shift a certain amount of the force you are applying backwards (1-2 shift) is also upwards, b/c of the angle, unless the shifter is leaned way far forward in first gear and straight up and down in 2nd. So therefore you would be pulling up alittle and if the shifter allows you to do that, its not something I want to deal with. I'm looking for a smooth, VERY mechanical feeling to the shifter, not this mushy, no center feeling that the stockers give you.
I havent heard anyone chime in about the Kirban, thats what I had in one of my F cars, and it was GREAT, but i have heard they arent that great in the vettes.
Anyone in the West TN area that would let me row a few gears in their car?

I only have one spring in mine on the right side and it's one of the lightest ones. I left out the one on the left side to make it easier to get into reverse, sixth and fifth. Believe me, even with the shifter out of the car I can pull up on the stick.
You have both of the heaviest springs in yours and that's likely what makes it so you can't pull the stick up.
Since you replaced the springs that came in it with heavier ones, you already know that the stick can move up and down freely and that only the springs keep it in place.
I had the Hurst but could never get rid of the rattle. I also had hard time getting into reverse. I bought the C6Z06 from Fred Beans and like it a lot. Throws are longer than the Hurst but very solid.
I had the rattle, stopped it by peaning the steel wedge until it fit the Hurst shift lever really tight, now no rattles.
I drove the new Z06, the shifter throws are short and it is very easy to shift, however the transmission has improved synchronizers.
The Hurst IMO is really stiff and I've tuned the springs.
If it is bad as you say it is then you simply need to adjust it. I had trouble with mine when I first put it in and thenI went back and adjusted it and it is as smooth as it can be.

I'm not saying the shifter isnt smooth, its just flimsy, and has a ton of play . like you can move the shifter around in about an inch circle when in nuetral.
I've got a Hurst and wouldn't settle for anything else. Had a few rattle issues at first but those were easily resolved. I love the short notchy shifts.
I replaced my stock C5 shifter with the C6 and loved it; thought I'd try the C6Z06. It's in now, but not significantly different than the std C6 shifter. C6Z06 has just slightly shorter throw (1" shorter on 1-2 throw measured at the top of the ****). It's also a bit notchier. I'd go back to the C6 shifter but like I said, the difference is not much, so not worth pulling up console again. btw the C6 shifter is for sale http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1387676
Is the C5 **** thread the same as the C6? Do the B&M/Hurst use the same threads as the C5/C6?
I have an aftermarket C6 look alike **** on my C5 shifter and it used these plastic threaded adapters to fit the C5 shaft....I'd like to get the C6Z06 shifter or possibly a B&M/Hurst but I want to keep the $50 ****...

The C6 ****/shaft are not threaded. The **** is held in place with a setscrew that prevents the problems encountered with threaded ***** twisting. Std C6 & C6 Z06 shifters use the same ****.
Patrick, I'm right there with you. I put in the C6Z06 shifter about 3 weeks ago. It is better than stock, but still to loose for me. It was hard to tell if it was in gear or not. I like a notchy feeling like my SS.
So, yesterday I went to Zip Products and got the Kirban. I was going for the Hurst, but the Kirban and Zip have a stick that will fit the C6Z06 **** without modification. I put it on and absolutely love it. It is WAY shorter than the C6Z and has that notchy feeling that I like. No more slop either. I'm taking her to the track Friday and I now have 100% confidence in the shifter. So, I have the Kirban with the C6Z ****. Great combination. Call Paul or Justin at Zip. They were a big help.
Are the C5 levers steel? I'd like to chop and weld mine...but I don't want to get started on the project and find out that I can't weld it myself. I did that with a Kona lever on my 1994 M6 F-body and it worked great...nice short throws....

Thats prob why yours comes off then. There was no reason to touch the oem springs. Its stiff at first but you need to drive it for a couple of weeks, it loosens up. After 1 year, I can shift my hurst with a finger. It smooth like stock yet ill never miss any gear.
I tell everyone who messes with the springs that they compromise the quality of the shifter.

Goes to show you that everyone is different. I haven't tried the Kirban yet so I can't say its better or worst...but I can say that the new C6 Z06 that I bought off you Dave, is AWESOME. I did buy the official Z06 **** to go with it which probably helps....but I measured my OEM C5 lever and there was 1" more throw per gear (1st to 2nd etc) than the C6Z06 lever. I had a hurst in my MN6 Z28 and it was nice, but I'd say this C6Z06 is even better! NO noise in the car, perfect shifts every time.
