I have a C6 shifter in my 2000, and it is one of the worst shifters I have ever driven, worse then my 1994 formula. Side to side play is rediculous, throws are about a mile long, and its too tall. Is there any difference between this and the C6 Z06 shifter, or should I just goto a kirban/b&m/hurst? I have a kirban in my 1994 Z28, and LOVE it, smooth as can be and not slop, no noise, with adjustable stops. So should I try one of those? Also is there a way to keep the C6 shifter ball, if I go with another shifter?
Thanks
Patrick
Patrick, the excessive side to side play may be caused by an insufficiently tightened bolt on the shift rod coupler. Worth a look.
The shifter isn't too tall - it's that **** that everyboby LOVES! Sometimes I think this forum is plagued by mass hysteria, wishful thinking, or both.
I shortened and threaded my C6 shifter to accept my C5 shift **** collection. Now it works as well as my shortened C5 shifter did, only now I'm a $150 poorer.
Replace your tranny fluid with some Mobil 1 synthetic ATF.
Just put a C6Z shifter in my 02 C5. Don't notice much difference from the stock shifter. Guess that shifter preferences are like exhaust preferences - very subjective. Seems like whatever you spend money for you really like - unless it is so bad that you have to admit it.

I guess you don't notice that 1" shorter throw on the C6Z shifter? That's pretty significant....though I don't know how much a B&M reduces it to...I'll check my friend's B&M and report back....I didn't pay full price for my shifter either since a fellow forum member hooked me up with a great deal.....but even if I had to pay full price I would consider it a worthwhile mod.

The point is that the shorter throw provided by the C6 is due to it's shorter stick. One can derive the same result by shortening their C5 shifter similarly. Except for the stick length and the bend-back, the C5 and C6 shifters are the same.
Replacing a stock height C5 shifter with a C6 will provide a noticeable difference in shift throws. But, comparing apples to apples, shortened C5 to C6, one will be hard pressed to detect any difference.
B&Ms, Hursts, Kirbans etc. are a whole different story and are not part of my observations. What I am suggesting is that those contemplating a C6 shifter swap at least try shortening their C5 first. I'm sure the same result can be obtained while saving a few bucks as well.
I had a Hurst in the car for almost 3 years, it was my first mod. The shifter is great for drag racing, but the ***** all rattled at WOT and there was lots more trans/gear/clutch noise even w/ all the tricks to quiet it down.
Then I went back to stock for a bit w/ a cut lever... that was ok, but way too vague.
Then I got a OEM C6 **** and had myhurst drilled to accept it... that was nice, but again just too stiff side/side and too noisey.
I hardly drag anymore... I drive the car in HPDEs, auto-x, and to work.
Thus.... I absolutely love my new C6Z06 shifter w/ my new oem inner boot. Zero vibs, Zero noise, and that amazing C6 ****.
I guess the noise and vibration one thing that I didnt expirence, not one bit. Possibly due to a mod I saw on the other Z06 site; use a Mr Gasket boot. Mine is dead quiet and no rattles.
To me it feels like a stock shifter (exactly what it is) It has no on-center feel, is very mushy, and too tall. I wish there were more people on this forum from the memphis area, I'd like to go feel the other shifters and see what I like best :-/

Sounds like you are looking for the hurst. You never hear complaints of a Hurst being too tall or mushy. It is always hard and deliberate. They are a little tougher to shift, and will get some higher vibrations. However, that hard mechanical feel is awesome. I wouldn't recommend a Hurst if your wife drives the car as much as you. Most women hate them!
Put a kirban on, and drilled and tapped the shift rod for the C6 ****, and am one happy camper, the kirban is the way to go, I drove a buddies z06 with a hurst, and the kirban is smoother and quieter, it's what should have come stock, IMO.
