Default How difficult is it to replace fuel level sensor?

Anyone done this yourself?

Any technical write ups on it or should I just take it to the dealer?

Thanks,
Mike

You've got to pull the fuel sending unit out of the tank. It's not too bad of a job, just takes time and can be messy. I've done it several times now, if you've got questions, or interested in going somewhere other than the dealer.

Thanks Chris,

Definitely would be interested in doing it myself if I can...

Any info would be great...

Drain tank, undo the bolts, remove teh floater while pump is still in the tank. slide pump back, and change sender. I think likely you can do this with the pump still in the car. There's one on each side i believe...buti 've only got experience on the drivers side

Are you having the infamous "sudden drop to empty" gauge problem? If so, you might want to try the Chevron Techron gas treatment before you replace the sending unit. If it doesn't work then you could do the down and dirty. Had the same problem about 6 months ago. Used two Techrons and problem disappeared (knock on wood).

Cheers

Here is a good writeup by ligenfelter on how to replace a stock fuel pump with one of theirs. It covers removing the fuel sending unit and the transmitter.

http://www.lingenfelter.com/pdf/c5fu...structions.pdf

Hope it helps...has pictures too!
