Most likely your door control module is causing the failure. The relays inside the module fail!
I would remove the door panel and make sure that all the connections are tight. You can also bang on the door control module and see if it starts working.
I did this repair myself the hardest part is getting the door panel off, I took the board to a CB radio shop and had the guy solder in the new relays total cost $6.50 1.30 for the relay, 5 to solder it in.

It might not be the relay... It could also be the DCM itself or the lock actuator.
I replaced the lock relay to try and correct an intermittent non locking situation....
It did not correct the problem....
I believe it depends on whether your intermittent lock is only with the FOB or if it also is a problem with the door activated swtich.
my car would set the alarm and lock passenger door from the key fob but it did not always set the drivers door lock-door control module fixed it.
don't know cost, it was fixed under warranty.
"both" was my issue as well.
The relay replacement did not fix it.
I am now checking the wiring for aloose connection before I replace the lock actuator.
Without a Tech II scanner, it is more difficult to diagnose....
I had this problem with my 2000 coupe. First time it was intermittent and was gradually getting worse. It was repaired under warranty and I believe the actuator was the problem. After about 14 months, the problem started again and gradually got worse. Now the passenger side can only be unlocked by pulling the lever on the inside of the door. I haven't bothered to try to fix it yet since the replacement part doesn't seem to last long.
I had similar problem, the driver side door would lock or unlock and sometime it wouldn't. I took my 99 to the dealer and they said it was the modular. Ok, I said fix it, I have an extended warranty with Warranty Direct. Are you ready for the cost? It took them all of a half hour to fix with new modular, total cost with labor $568.00. I almost fell over when they showed me the invoice. I paid nothing but it was still very much a shock!
For me, I could hear the relays click when pushing lock/unlock, but locks did not do anything. Same with the RKE (using the FOB ). Replaced the relays in the DCM and it worked fine. Easy fix if you can solder/de-solder.
