'chip' question

all it is, is a portable electronic device that can plug into any c5?.. so if say my neighbor had one i could just borrow it and instantly increase my hp? how much hp would it increase it by?

Some of these are just resistors that trick the computer on the incoming air temperature...
But more info is required to know what brand, model and what the claims are....

It sounds as if you are refering to a hand held power programmer such as a hypertech or predator. There is no "chip" for a C-5. And the answer to your question is no you cannot borrow the programmer and use it on your car. The reason is because the first thing a programmer does when you connect it to your car is it will read and store your VIN number and it will "lock" itself to that vehicle and will not work in more than one vehicle at a time. If your neighbor where to uninstall the programming from his car then it could be used on your car but not both at the same time.
It can be used to turn on your cooling fans at a lower temp and increase shift firmness in an auto. As for hp gains that is very subjective and depends on your long term plans and other mods you have on your car. For more info you can use the search on the forum. You may even look in the parts section and find a good deal on a used one for a fair price.
