Default Can the side ducts be made functional?

Has anyone been able to make the side ducts functional to help get heat out of the engine compartment? I have opened up the fog light shrouds to help get ambient air in, but also want to help get the hot air out. Is this reasonable possible using some sort of ducting? Anybody already do it?

Thanks,

Clayton from Las Vegas

Easily done. Unbolt the fender liner and you will see a block off panel. I only removed mine on the driver's side. Removing the pass side one exposes the PCM to more water than I wanted or dared.

You can also cut segments out of the hood seal weather stripping (above the firewall) to vent the engine bay.

Yep,,remove the drivers side. You can trim off some of the passengers side to allow some air out but still keep the weather out of the fender well where the PCXM and TAC live. There water tight but no sence adding more water to the area.

There are fender well accesses in both fenders!

For what it's worth, I ask ET the same question awhile ago and he indicated that testing showed no improvement in engine compartment airflow.

The side vents are functional- they are open to the engine compartment from the top; the plastic inserts/shields are there, I assume, to protect from water or ???????? I have no idea whether their presence reduces the maximum potential cooling effect, although I recall some racers in the Autocrossing/roadracing section claim their track temps dropped after removing the inserts.

Wheel well is a high pressure zone so I vent them through there. It was reduce lift and create more downforce. Also vented them on top where it goes out the hood as you see in the picture below.

i removed my driver's side and noticed quite a bit of heat coming from it when i parked vs. the other side that was still closed off.

although the passenger has the battery surround shielding the area from the engine too...

The louvers in John's hood are functional, there are cutouts below to the top of the wheel well which vent out the louvers on the side of the hood.

Howard, the simplest way is to open up the fog light shrouds and remove the hood seal weather striping, I'll show you at WSIR this month

I have the fog shrouds opened already

I remember reading some reasons NOT to remove the rear hood seal...something about pressure and drawing dirt into the engine bay.

But maybe at least to remove it at the track if its easy to take on and off.

.....I'm looking for any cooling I can get for WSIR...see you there

If you are talking about removing the hood seal at the base of the windshield..... I wouldn't. That is a high pressure area and will push air INTO the engine bay at speed. Plus water, dirt, etc. Pull the block off plate in the fender vents. Easy to do, and it works.
