Default rear end suction

Don't hang out on this forum much and I know this has been covered. But this was a new one on me. I have owned a 2000 auto since new, and early on it has had a small drip on left side of rear end. Didn't want to have it fixed under warranty because figured they would do more harm than good.

Here is the interesting part, the car has 27000 miles now and I put it up on the rack to check the oil level for the first time and when I pulled the plug in the differential there was a rush of air like a vacumn release. I have never heard anything like that from any kind of gear box. The car had been sitting for a couple weeks and all I did was drive it to the lift.

I am wondering if anyone has expierenced this before? I have known of people having the leak fixed only to have it return in the future. Any comments would be welcomed.

Thanks SSS

YES, that is normal, Phil from DTE had a thorough explanation of this when i spoke with him at the CI; there is a vent on the top of the diff, when the temp rises the pressure releases out the top, i believe there is a ball/spring that acts as the valve/vent

Thanks man, that one had me stumped. Guess I'll just keep driven it and check the level once and awhile.
