Default Air filter questions

I would prefer a non-guess or manufactures claim answer here.

I have been looking through a few Corvette catalog's "Eckler's, MidAmerica, etc. at the replacement air filter systems, K & N, BlackHawk, (I believe) and a few others.

Now my question, has anyone ever performed a before and after dyno test themself and noticed whether there actually was any change in horsepower? Most of the manufactures claim some increase in horsepower, but that is their claim. I am looking for answers from, you the user.

The only reason I am asking is that if the claims are true, I figure I may as well go with the system which gives the best performance increase.

Secondly, I have gotten the idea that with some of these units your "chip" may have to be reprogrammed, anyone have any input about this? I have also heard that the "chip" will make self-adjustments for the change(?) I do not wish to get myself into an area where I start throwing DIC codes

Lastly, do the air filter systems invalidate the GMPP extended warranty?

As always, and believe it or else!

Thanks!

I can answer a couple of your questions but not the one about dyno differences.

These filters will not void your warranty. The Magnuson-Moss warranty Act says that a manufacturer must prove that an aftermarket addition caused the specific problem before they can deny warranty coverage. So unless your filter failed and casued the problem you are OK. That does not mean that a service advisor won't try... but that once you quote Magnuson-Moss they will quickly back-off.

Your chip will not need to be reprogrammed for an aftermarket filter. It will sense the increased airflow and adjust the fuel trims to match the increased flow. It can do this for up to a 20-25% incerase in airflow.
This re-learn will happen over a number of driving cycles automatically. If you want to make it happen earlier you can force a re-learn .

To force a re-learn do an advanced search under C5 Technical for "PCM re-learn" you will find several posts with the detailed procedures on how to do this.

I seemed to notice a slight improvement in response when i added blackwing (maybe just wishful thinking) and the difference at dragstrip between Z06 airbox w/ stock filter (13.7 @ 103.2) and Blackwing was (13.3 @ 103.5) is too small to be of any signifigance considering all the other variables (2 different days, 3 months apart); i figure ET difference was due to other things besides actual power increase and since mph pretty much the same I don't think Blackwing added much. Very unscientific.

Now if you're talking about something that draws air from cut radiator shroud or Vararam, there is probably a difference. People have reported larger dragstrip gains w/ Vararam. If i hadda do it again i'd spend the extra $200 and go w/ a Callawy Honker as opposed to Blackwing.

See my sig. This is fairly typical of aftermarket intake systems. Remember that dyno runs are typically done with hood-up. If you don't have a cold air system or have not fabricated one to allow outside air to be pulled in through your air filter, then the dyno numbers can be deceiving. Without cold air, your CPU will dial back ignition timing when the intake air temp gets a bit above 100 degrees. A Blackwing, for instance, will pull in air that is 140 degrees or more on a warm day and at slow moving conditions. By then, your engine has lost 10 HP. It is for this reason that you should make sure that your engine can inhale as cold air as possible.

Dave68 are yoou referring to this? How do you avoid taking in 140 degree air?

Halltech Stinger-R intake system 4/17/04
Cold-air scoop mod 5/20/04

Thanks for you answers so far
