I'll stick with the gasoline until our government eventually forces us to convert. I used to run pure alky in my race car and the milage on the street is terrible. They talk about regaining 6-!7% of your milage but they don't mention the amount you lose.
I personally wouldn't do the conversion because there isnt any available any where at all on the east coast... according to the gm info it is only available in the midwest states right now for 3.75 a gallon... plus the reduction in economy, that becomes expensive... there is however a positive to this for all of us guys in the car world, as the E85 has an average of 105-113 octane and if you think about it it is a lot cheaper than buying race gas through the mail. Just my .02
yea there is no way i would try this on the vette unless i tried it on something else. Also liek you said ethanol is stil on the pricey side. I would be willing to try it on my beater once the e85 price comes down. But i guess when gas starts reaching 4-5 bucks than 3.75 is starting to look good.
My 2004 Yukon can use E85 so I've been reading up on it. Popular Mechanics had a good article about it a couple of months ago, it's now online if you want to read it, just search their website for E85. Anyway, they say that E85 has only 85% of the energy of gasoline so your mileage will go down at least 15%. If you can get E85 for a savings of at least 15% over premium then that would be good but if it costs the same then you are loosing $$$$.
Ethanol does have a higher octane rating but when blended with gasoline like E85 is I would guess that the octane rating is affected, I don't know what it would be rated at. No one sells it any where close to me here in Okla so I've never tried it on my Yukon. I would NEVER use it in my 'Vette! My baby ONLY gets Top Tier Premium!
Before anyone switches to E85, buy the current issue of Car & Driver. There is a very detailed article about using E85. It's a must read! I will wait until I have no choice before I use E85.
i agree that the gas isnt cheap enought to out weigh the lower mileage. you are still better off going hybrid instead of e85. Im just throwin an idea around for the sake of conversation adn to spark comments and ideas. im also just looking to see what i should get enxt incase my beater takes a turn for the worst. good input so far
Now is not quite the time for E85 in our cars. Look to see manufacturer conversion kits in the next few years. By then, E85 distribution points will be more available and the price of ethanol will have stabalized and begin to significantly drop in price.
Currently, ethanol is still cheaper than gas, but the price is still inflated because of demand. As each week passes, new ethanol plants are being announced. To further bring the prices of ethanol down, in two years time cellulosic ethanol production will be ramping up.
Its not a matter of if, but when. Once E85 becomes readily available in my area, I will consider a high compression engine setup.
there is also a good article on MSNBC about E85. If fact it takes more hydrocarbon or oil based fuel to make E85. Also, we don't have enough land to grow all the corn needed to convert 100% of US vehicles to E85. Also the amount of fertilizers used for growing corn are tremendous and end up running off and polluting the water. There is alot left to look at before we go down the road too far. Just like the hybrids or solar powered vehicles. It takes petroleum to make the batteries and panels and how do you dispose of the waste once it is used up. For every action there is a reaction.
